Summary

Banks: Buried in the shadows of the city, there's a hotel called The Pope. Ailing, empty, and dark, it sits abandoned and surrounded by a forgotten mystery. But you think it's true, don't you, Kai Mori? The story about the hidden 12th floor. The mystery of the dark guest who never checked in and never checks out. You think I can help you find that secret hideaway and get to him, don't you? I will never betray him. So sit tight. On Devil's Night, the hunt will be coming to you.

Kai: You have no idea what I seek, Little One. You don't know what I had to become to survive three years in prison for a crime I would gladly commit again. I want that hotel, I want to find him, and I want this over. I want my life back. But the more I'm around you, the more I realize this new me is exactly who I was meant to be. So come on, kid. Don't chicken out. My house is on the hill. So many ways in, and good luck finding your way out. I've seen your hideaway. Time to see mine.

Contains mature themes.

Love this!

I love this book! I was intrigued by Kai in Corrupt so I'm so glad he got his own book!! I love Banks! The mystery and suspense throughout this book was great! I love the flashbacks and seeing more of the other characters as well. Looking forward to Damons book next 😍

Great story. Great series. Addictive.

The narrators may seem a bit odd to some listeners but I feel they bring the twisted stories to life.
I’ve loved them. Can’t wait for the next one.

Long prologue..

I felt like this book was more about laying the groundwork for Damons book than it was about the romance between Kai and Banks - which by the way, I didn’t even really find all that believable. Still very excited to read Kill Switch and hope it will put this series back on track for me.

This is just a review of the audio... I will rate the book when I finish

I am about a third of the way through and honestly I feel like I made a mistake getting the audiobook... I read the first book int he series myself and was looking forward to reading the rest...

The story it’s leaf is good so far... I got the audiobook so I could listen whilst driving and I love the story... I have taking breaks eager to know more...

However, and there was bound to be a however as I am reviewing midway through... I don’t know if there is a problem with my copy as a review I read said the voice actors did a stellar job, however Banks chapters either sound like all the words were recorded separately then the audio was strung together to for the sentences or it sounds like it’s been sped up... and this is not different chapters sounding differently, this is every Banks chapter so far flicking between fast and pieced together.

Kai’s chapters sound fine and are read well, but Banks chapters are making it hard for me to continue.

Twisted!

Again having read this first as a book and needing a refresher in plot and characters I plunged into the audio having loved the dark and twisted nature of the story.

These pair of narrators continue the excellent job they delivered in Corrupt bring life to Kai and Banks with each having to take on the other characters voice during some dialect. Great vocal tone and feelings added to the delivery!

Disappointing

I just read Birthday Girl by the same author and it was 5 star brilliant, so eagerly got the only book left on Audible by this author that I didn’t have. Unfortunately, this book was all over the place. Banks was a pain, and her ‘pride’ was just annoying. Kai seemed clueless and bumbled around. It would be better if the Horsemen were actually capable men rather than bored messed up kids that happen to have grown up, but are really still children. The chemistry and relationship between Kai and Banks was lacking and I didn’t feel the love. The flashbacks disrupted the flow. I know Kai was supposed to sound smug, but the narration got really annoying.

It all seemed more like at random times the book was trying to build up the aimless fear you’d get telling ghost stories at a sleepover when you’re 13, but nothing actually happens. The rest of the time I was bored.

Brilliant!!! This deserves more than 5 stars!

This second book might even be better than the first one! The only thing I hated was that the book ended and I have to wait for anymore in the series. This series has everything you look for in a book and the narrators are both extremely talented. I was entertained every moment. Do yourself a big favor and make this purchase, you will not regret it! Loved it, loved it, loved it!!!

Suspense and secrets

Hideaway is a romantic suspense that can be read as a standalone but is a continuation of Corrupt - book #1 of the Devil's Night series. Corrupt features the "Four Horsemen" Michael, Damon, Kai and Will, and focuses mainly on Michael's story. Hideaway picks up where Corrupt ends and is Kai's story. Layers and layers of mystery surround Kai and "Banks."

I would have loved to have the story compressed a bit. I had high hopes for Kai's story. Banks was fascinating. I loved her strength and commitment. The sex is so steamy. But overall I am getting a bit tired of "Devil's" night (which I think is mischief night). The main characters are out of college. I am hoping that the next book "Kill Switch" can bring redemption to Damon.

I enjoyed the narration by Tatiana Sokolov and Jeremy York.

so far I have enjoyed these books

it's refreshing to read a new story plot it is the same in Guy meets girl Girl Meets Boy they fall in love in the end. but for me a lot of these books are just the same you know the story of they meet either girl screws up or boy screws up and then they end up together these are a lot of given take a little Thriller involved they're very much enjoyable.

Good continuation

Good Part II. Even though it wasn't as many twisty turny aspects as the first one. I didn't enjoy the narrators. I found myself speeding up the audio several times to make their voices more tolerable...but I think doing that took away from the true delivery of the story. I will "read" part III, definitely!

The least traumatic in the series.

The power struggle between Banks and Kai is refreshing; it's like a chess match with traps and high stakes. There are some steamy and hot scenes between them...then you get a taste of Damon's upbringing. 😳😬
Props to Tatiana and Jeremy for not butchering the Japanese language. ❤😁

Suspense...

This was really Kai's story. I was so excited for this. Which is why maybe I felt a little let down. There was a lot of back and forth. Past and present. I don't mind the flashbacks normally but these seemed to be so revealing that it was proving how much was missed. These boys and girl(s)seem to have more control than anything or anyone I have ever seen, so I struggled with a lot of the plot line. The premise ,the suspense I loved . However It missed the mark for me. One of those it's just me moments. The narration was great so I enjoyed listening and that kept me in the story. I feel if I was reading I may not have finished.

Re-read first book

I listen to the first book in the series about a year ago and loved it. It is a dark twisted romance so if you're not into that sort of thing, skip this series all together. I started listening to the second book and felt completely lost. (Many series books make so many references back to past events to remind you of what happened in the last story that sometimes it's annoying and repetitious. This one not so much!) I went back and re-listened to the first book and then when started this book again it was easier to follow the story.
I liked the first book better but this one did keep my attention throughout. There were some references to sexual abuse and an almost rape scene so keep that in mind if that's a trigger for you.
Overall if you like the first book, I would recommend the second book but we still don't have the full story so likely you'll want to listen to the third book and I believe there may be a fourth one coming?

Blown Away!

Penelope Douglas is fast becoming my favorite author!! I’d read Corrupt before and even got the chance to meet her, but Hideaway...OMG...fantastical!! I was completely hooked with all the twists and turns, the thrill of Banks and Kai with a little Damon thrown in! This book was a perfect follow up to Corrupt. Both are a MUST ABSOLUTELY read!! Loved it!
