Summary

Frontline is the story of an aristocrat's daughter who joins the war effort as a nurse. In a field hospital in rural France, she meets Will, a dockworker's son serving as a stretcher-bearer. As rumours of an armistice begin to circulate, so, too, does a mysterious respiratory illness that soldiers are referring to as the 'Spanish flu'.

Excellent first novel!

Just finished this on audible and thoroughly enjoyed it. Extremely well written and clearly narrated - I quickly engaged with the characters and enveloped myself in the story. A lot of interesting medical facts & figures from the time clever interwoven with historical events from WWI made this story all the more interesting and relatable. Dr Hilary has produced an excellent first novel & I’m thoroughly looking forward to the two follow up titles.

Informative as well as good story

Really enjoyed this book right from the start.
Story good and as the basis of this story was ww1 I had no doubt I’d enjoy it immensely.

Frontline war and medicine

You can certainly tell this was written by a Doctor.

I personally loved all he medical and surgical references throughout, especially the amazing Mr Gilles who was a pioneering plastic surgeon in WW1, and has small surgical forceps named after him.

The story is set towards the end of WW1, mainly in France but some in ol blighty. The description of the trenches and life in France throughout this time was described in all its gory sad detail.
Sometimes so much was going on in the story jumping back and forth across the channel that it had me rewinding now and again as it was easy to get lost.

The commencement of Spanish flu at the end of the war was an important addition and one we can relate to in our Covid 19 world.

Gregory Cox was an ok narrator, but not up there with my favourites.

Persevere………it’s brilliant!

I had this book in my library for a long time and never quite got past the prologue. As I am very interested in the history of WW1, I decided to give it another go and wow was it worth it!!! A love story, yes but without it overshadowing the powerful story of the war itself. An amazing insight into the details of war which are often ignored for what may be seen as the more, “glamorous” aspects. I was hooked right to the end. Ten out of ten ✅

Truly incredible narration and wonderfully written

I liked everything about this book, getting to know the characters, understanding their heartache and joy during a time of devastation.
The description of the men and horses walking through the mud made me cry.

The narrators ability to switch accents so incredibly well made me feel like there were more than one person reading the book. The best narrator for me since Art Malik and the bee keeper of Allepo.

Dr Hilary Jones is a superb story teller and I can’t wait for his next novel.

Topical and thought provoking

This story of WW1 & Spanish Flu is so topical today. Told through the eyes of the young medics it has so much relevance. Love wins in the end.
