About this listen

I would definitely say this book is worth your time. Not quite as good as Horus rising but still great opening to the Heresy!

Enjoyable listening with fantastic voice acting (although weirdly enough despite it being the same voice actor as previously some of the character voices changed!)

The story itself is perhaps a little slow to start with but the final 1/3 is pretty great and depicted the struggles faced and turmoil really well and imaginatively although this was always going to be challenging considering everyone knows the ultimate outcome!

Loken and Targaddon are great characters with lots of good depth but (just occasionally) can be a little predicable!

Enthralling read. Very well performed and has left me hungry for more. Would recommend to anyone who is curious about the 40k universe. Get book one first though... 😉

I honestly can't believe how good this serious is,
Toby Longworth has done an outstanding job telling the story, he has read the book beautifully and with just the right amount of humour.
Graham McNeill is an outstanding writer

False Gods is, overall, an excellent read, Toby Longworth delivers a fantastic performance and the first third is up to par with the sensational Horus Rising. However, Horus' fall to chaos and his corruption of the lodge is lightning fast, characters and plot events are dealt with markedly quickly, and towards the end it really feels like the book is just trying to move everyone where they need to be for Isstvan. It loses the supremely organic nature of Horus Rising and overall it is indicative of a loss of steam in the last third.

The story is great, no disputing that. For me it isn't as good as horus rising but it's still a great novel.

Unfortunately the narration on this is bad enough to make me wince at times.

Some characters are fine such as Garviel, Horus and Karkasy but others are done so badly that I have to laugh.

For example Abaddon, the hulking, grumpy giant, baddest astartes around, born and raised in the roughest slums of Cthonia... sounds like a posh, nasally nerd. It's really, really bad and enough to snap me out of the story at times.

The narration itself is fine, some characters are fine, others... Not so much.
