About this listen

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of Expectation by Anna Hope, read by Vinette Robinson.

Hannah, Cate and Lissa are young, vibrant and inseparable. Living on the edge of a common in East London, their shared world is ablaze with art and activism, romance and revelry – and the promise of everything to come. They are electric. They are the best of friends.

Ten years on, they are not where they hoped to be. Amidst flailing careers and faltering marriages, each hungers for what the others have. And each wrestles with the same question: what does it take to lead a meaningful life?

EXPECTATION is a novel of the highs and lows of friendship – how it can dip, dive and rise again. It is also about finding your way: as a mother, a daughter, a wife, a rebel. Most of all, it explores that liminal space between expectation and reality, the place – full of dreams, desires and pain – in which we all live our lives.

exceptional

Encapsulating and breathtakingly painful and beautiful: just like life its self. An unrestrained account of friendship, motherhood, love and loss.

So disappointed with the narration.

I think If I had read this book I would have enjoyed it more than the audible version .I felt as though the narrator was quite half hearted in her reading, the dialogue between the characters was done well, but the rest was read in a very monotonous tone .I finished, but it was a struggle. Disappointing.

What a wonderful book

This book was mentioned on the podcast the high low as I looked through the list of books the girls recommended this one caught my eye.
I just loved it. How Anna hope discusses real life with all its problems is just so exact it’s just so real.
I loved it and would thoroughly recommend it. Bravo Anna hope.

Depressing...

There is little hope for these bleak characters. I found my concentration repeatedly drifting but somehow made it to the end, didn't really get alot out of this dreary listen! It's dull, the characters are determined to stick in their sad perspectives...urgh I'm exhausted just thinking about it again!

Great writing

The story was beautifully written, but there was something about the narration that I found to be quite heavy going and a bit too intense for me.

Lovely book

All facets of womanhood, expertly woven together, really enjoyed this. Particularly enjoyed Lissa’s story line

Real

I enjoyed this book and the narration of it. I listened to it for long periods of time, wanting to know what developed with each character. A realistic look at life, without a predictable, fairytale ending.

Beautifully and sensitively written.

I was initially unsure of this book, feeling it to be a little slow, but it's not slow at all, it is understated, relying on the characterisation and careful observations of these three women, their inward and more conscious struggles and their extended relationships, over time.
The writing is sensitive and the narration is considered and careful.
I loved it.

Words are failing me.

Anna Hope writes with care and thought and dark humour and poignancy and is yet is acerbic at times , all whist depicting a world which could be your own. Or your friends, or your sisters or your mother’s.
To say this is a brilliantly written novel about women and their relationships is too reductive. But those women are here and are well crafted and I believed in them and know them now. Their roles in work and life and family, and their ways are real and I feel better for having read this novel. Despite the ugly sobs I suffered through a moment or two, whilst listening in the car today.
This novel may not resonate with all, but it certainly did with me and I feel Hope’s writing will connect with many.
I can’t wait to read/listen to more from her. I’m on pins.
