About this listen

When Pete Shelley, lead singer of legendary punk band Buzzcocks, passed away in 2018, we lost one of music's brightest stars - as well as the chance to hear his story.

Or so it seemed.

Recordings have surfaced of a series of remarkable interviews in which Pete tells the story of his life, his band and his place at the beating heart of the punk explosion in fascinating detail.

These remarkable recordings have now been brought back to life by professional actors in this audio edition of Ever Fallen in Love: The Lost Buzzcocks Tapes.

Transcribed from a series of late-night calls with a close friend, the audiobook goes song-by-song through Buzzcocks releases to reveal the personal memories behind the music and the inspiration for masterpieces such as 'Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've)' and 'What Do I Get?'.

Published for the first time and with the blessing of Pete's estate, Ever Fallen in Love: The Lost Buzzcocks Tapes is a tribute to a founding member of punk and a chance to hear the story of one of music's true visionaries.

…I’m not sure I’m going to finish this book. It’s grinding my gears more than I care for the insight. I love Pete Shelley, heard lots of interviews and spoken to him at gigs, so the faux Mancunianisms just irritate. The actress performing as the female ‘interviewer’ speaks with such a staccato type inflection IT. SoundS. AS. IF. EverY. WorD. IS. BeinG. ReaD. FroM. A. DifferenT. PagE. - no flow at all. Maybe the author speaks like that but I doubt it. As for the narrator playing Pete Shelley - oh my days, tragic! Sounds more like the caricature dumb northerner from the League of Gentlemen attempting a Mark Lawrenson. There’s a disarming and charming campness to the way Pete Shelley speaks, but come on? No self respecting Mancunian would ever say ‘nerr’ when the word is no; ‘boose’ when the word is bus; ‘oh-marj’ for homage (the list could go on and on) - a very poor parody. If you recut this, please narrate the text in the third person, as it is, or simply play the tapes. Apologies if this offends, but I feel this verges on taking the P! Disappointed of Burnage.

Great to hear the ‘inside story’ of Buzzcocks… but…
