Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
What if the things we keep hidden say more about us than those we put on display?
We all have a random collection of the things that made us—photos, tickets, clothes, souvenirs, stuffed in a box, packed in a suitcase, crammed into a drawer. When Jarvis Cocker starts clearing out his loft, he finds a jumble of objects that catalogue his story and ask him some awkward questions:
Who do you think you are?
Are clothes important?
Why are there so many pairs of broken glasses up here?
From a Gold Star polycotton shirt to a pack of Wrigley's Extra, from his teenage attempts to write songs to the Sexy Laughs Fantastic Dirty Joke Book, this is the hard evidence of Jarvis's unique life, Pulp, 20th-century pop culture, the good times and the mistakes he'd rather forget. And this accumulated debris of a lifetime reveals his creative process—writing and musicianship, performance and ambition, style and stagecraft.
This is not a life story. It's a loft story.
Recorded on location with the author and featuring archival material, Good Pop, Bad Pop, is an intimate and immersive listening experience with an icon of British culture.

I could have listened to this forever.
As a kid of the 80s, fascinated with radio at an early age, listening to it through the standard issue singular cream earpiece late into the night, this both called to me, and answered my call.
Jarvis' presence was a large part of my 20s, he just seems in one way or another to have always been there. Listening to him talking about a myriad of things and their attached meanings made me think about my own accumulated 'stuff' and that yes, we all have to climb through our own metaphorical and actual loft hatches and sort out our own things, and decide what to keep or cob, reliving our own stories along the way. This made me think that Jarvis is just like I thought he always was - more one of 'us' than the other front men of the time, he was just like on of your mates.
Jarvis' love of music and of discovering John Peel at the end of the dial also struck a chord (sorry) with me, who also did very similar, which formed my often not so mainstream musical tastes. Also, similarly to Peel, Jarvis has a voice you could listen to without ever tiring. I could genuinely listen to him talk all day.
So thank you Jarvis. Thanks for a really thoughtful book, for sharing your memories and for making me reminisce on my own.

British legend
A collection of stories and anecdotes from Jarvis Cocker whilst sorting out is loft, this book is both entertaining and throughly enjoyable, and made even better as it’s narrated by Jarvis himself.

Bloody marvellous!
This reminded me of how wonderful Jarvis Cocker is and made me like him even more than I did already. What a brilliant guy! If you’ve ever smiled at his wit or sung along to his songs, treat yourself to some time in his company. Already waiting for part two…
