Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

In our lives, terrible things may happen. Michael Rosen has grieved the loss of a child, lived with debilitating chronic illness, and faced death itself when seriously unwell in hospital. In spite of this he has survived, and has even learned to find joy in life in the aftermath of tragedy.

In Getting Better, he shares his story and the lessons he has learned along the way. Exploring the roles that trauma and grief have played in his own life, Michael investigates the road to recovery, asking how we can find it within ourselves to live well again after - or even during - the darkest times of our lives. Moving and insightful, Getting Better is an essential companion for anyone who has loved and lost, or struggled and survived.

Heartfelt, honest and ultimately uplifting, Rosen delves into some of his darkest times, and shares how he carried on.

This book came into my life at a time when I needed it. I'd been struggling with low mood and grief, burnout, stress and anxiety. Hearing someone else tell their story of similar issues, albeit under different circumstances, helped me to feel better and left me better able to deal with the curveballs life throws at us.
Interesting for me too, as a creative writer, was the section on writing processes.
While I'm not sure I would call this a self-help book, it has certainly helped me get back to being myself, it helped me get better.

moving and uplifting

I'd never heard of Michael Rosen before but this was just what I needed. I'm going through a rough patch. When you go through a rough patch, it helps to hear how others went through rough patches too and they came out on the other side. Rosen is honest, you won't be the same again, but you will find a new normal and, most importantly, you will be ok. This book doesn't feel like advice. It doesn't feel like one of those self help books. It's more like having a cosy chat with a friend, a friend who shares their inner most self with you. Thank you Michael Rosen, it's very generous of you and it has helped.

So much more than I expected

I expected this book to be about Michael’s recovery from Covid. It was so much more than that. I’ve re-listened to several chapters as I’ve gone along, I’ve enjoyed it so much I’m going to start from the beginning and listened to it all over again.

Moving stuff

Like most teachers, I’ve always admired MR and enjoyed his children’s books immensely. I knew little of his personal life and this was a very moving account. An interesting mix of autobiography and self help, but very gentle. It was hard listening at times as he has lived through great loss, but it was uplifting too.

An auditory comfort blanket

Michael Rosen never fails to inspire. I experienced so many emotions listening to this. How generous of spirit and pragmatically empathetic this man is. I wish he was my dad!

A Joy

Michael Rosen your books are always amazing.
Real, raw yet with the application of Rosen’s imagination and one’s need to make things better his imaginative visual analogies has provided a useful guide to help me with my own loss.
Michael, listening to you reading your book is always a joy. Thank you for being you.
