Summary

As a forty-three-year-old, newly divorced, single mom, I know two things for certain: starting over sucks, and magic isn’t real. At least that’s what I thought. I mean, starting over really does stink, but when it comes to magic, I have to rethink everything.

I’ve spent the last year since my ex left me going through the motions. Get up. Work. Care for a grumpy teenager. Cook dinner. Go to bed. Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

Nothing changes … Until it does.

After bidding on a box of old books at an estate auction, I’m experiencing changes.

And I’m not talking about menopause.

My garden gnome Linda has come to life. No, really. Her name is Linda, and she never shuts up. A chonky cat with a few secrets of his own has adopted me. And a gorgeous professor of the occult tells me I’m a witch.

Right now, I’m not sure who’s crazier—me, Linda, or the hottie professor.

If this is my new reality, it’s nature’s cruel midlife trick. I’m learning fast that earth spells might be easy, but they aren’t cheap. All magic exacts a toll, and if I don’t master the elements, the elements will be the death of me.

Literally.

not for me

the accents killed me. The story was very repetitive and I had zero connect with the characters

Maybe not for me

The narrator was okay, though the voices became quite samey, particularly the male characters.

As for the story ... After a while I found myself mouthing the words of the characters before they spoke, always a bad sign. I was bored for much of the listen, and struggled to reach the end. I wasn't much interested in the climax by the time it arrived. Very superficial: needed more meat to the story.

Couldn’t finish it

The narrator was fine until the German accent. Thankfully it was not a huge part of the book. It was just horrible.

Putting that aside, the story just didn’t do it for me.

I really enjoyed this

The characters are well filled out, there's a cat (a definite plus for me!) and, within the world that's built here, easily immersive. An easy, enjoyable read.

The “German” accent in the audiobook makes the story harder to enjoy!

I’m enjoying the story itself very much, and would recommend it to someone as a physical or ebook read - but as an audiobook it’s a slog: the narrator is quite flat - even in dramatic plot points, it’s very meh as a reading style, lacks any real emphasis or enthusiasm (or the required drama) - and don’t even get me STARTED on the “German” accent being attempted! I understand that accents aren’t everyone’s strong point - but maybe if it’s so vital to the plot that a character has Germanic origins, choose a narrator that’s…heard that accent?
