Summary

The Caldwells have one goal in life: to be left alone. They’ve been living on the backwater planet of C’dar for years, smuggling and scavenging their way to a comfortable life on their homestead. But you know the saying about all good things - they come to an end.

The civilization wasn’t content with falling apart the first time and has finally caught wind of the ol’ boys and girls on their little rock in the middle of nowhere. Ain’t nothing much they can do about that, though...except fight ’em.

It all comes down to three generations of Caldwells - Luke “Drifter” Caldwell, Woodrow “Appetite” Caldwell, and Cassie “Kindle” Caldwell - as they fend for everything they call home.

What is isolation worth?

Recommend highly

This is a very different sifi book, even though it is set in the far future it is a very familiar story. It's funny plenty of action but it's the narrator that brings ti to life, great job.

Stunningly original

Considering this is the authors 2nd book, it's an amazing piece of craftsmanship and maturity. A vision of humanity in a distant future where genetic engineering can be used very aggressively. Humans have spread to the stars, discovering other alien tech from time gone by.

One thing I dread is the cliché of deus ex machina type endings ie - someone walks in with some sort of tech and blows the antagonist away. This is resisted and thank you so very much for this. The book has a well developed and I feel un-rushed ending and there is a obvious way forward. How the story ends is well constructed after the meat of the middle act - it does leave you wanting to know more about the characters and how they progress. But you are satisfied with the ending and not left hanging.

Oh the narrator (and thank you so much for recording this in a studio in a well treated room) Alex Zonn wow, someone who I'd never heard before, but now on my listen list - just does the telling of the story so much justice. Very droll and chilled narration that was fantastic.

A Rollickin and quirky adventure

Well, this audiobook is a unique surprise. My first experience with a novel by Deston Musden was a wild ride - it has everything - humour, a rollicking pace, on the edge of your seat thrills and action, and an interplanetary setting that is an experience all of its own.

The Caldwell family are totally hilarious - From Patriarch Luke “Drifter” Caldwell, his massive son (in heart and body) Woodrow “Appetite” Caldwell, to passionate and determined grandaughter, Cassie “Kindle” aka 'the flame' Caldwell and all the extended family characters we are take on a wild adventure. These quirky mutant moonshiners and hillbillies each have their own unique warmth and soul (with a little ruthless thrown in for balance LOL) . Hold on to your last threads of calm and take a breath when you can and be carried away by the journey!

Like every other aspect of this book, the narrator was a surprise - but oh so perfect for the characters. The little time it took me to adjust to Alex Zonn's groove was well worth it.

I received this audiobook free in return for an honest review - From the stunning cover which captured my attention from the outset to the great story-telling and world-creation that drew me in from the first few pages, this book was an absolute pleasure.

A great sifi

I was lucky enough to get a copy of this book and I'm leaving an honest and voluntary review.
Being different isn't always a bad thing.
This drew me in very quickly, from the outset I liked the characters, the further I got the more I wanted. character progression is great with a good amount of detail.
The detailing throughout is perfectly apt. Its got humor, action and all you'd want in a good sifi.
The narration is spot on, brings life to characters and the story.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone
