Summary
Previously published as Desperate Times: 1-4 Collected (an EMP apocalypse survival harem) by Lara X. Lust.
Dom’s life has never been easy.
He’s fought for everything he has. Forged in the fires of poverty and neglect, he’s spent years building a life for himself. And it seems like everything is finally coming together. He lives on his own in a decent house at the edge of town, he works for himself writing novels, he’s debt-free, and, most recently, his relationship with his hot best friend and her sexy friend seems to be heading somewhere a lot more fun....
But everything is about to change. When a solar flare slams the Earth with a worldwide EMP and knocks out power everywhere, Dom and the two women he cares about most will be forced to walk hundreds of miles through chaos to a safe location. It will take everything for them to survive.

Nice
If you like the apocalypse and haremfantasy genre, it's a great, if kinda short, audiobook to listen to.
I really liked that the reason for the blackout was known and not just another riddle for the characters to solve.

3 hours of sex in a 5 hour book
I thought this was going to be a apocalypse survival story instead it's a erotic novel with a survival sub plot. I'm really sad it turned out this was cause I liked the premise of the book. there was just too much sex not enough story it takes hours for the threat to even be mentioned.

awesomeness in a jar
a great post cataclysmic harem story. the MC pulls himself up by the boot straps but stays humble and helps some of the girls in his life and winds up starting a relationship with them. it's a great way to spend a few hours.

It is pretty basic but fun.
This is pretty typical for the genre with an apocalyptic event with the MC gathering some others around him/her. With this one being a male MC and women since it is a harem story. This is definitely the first book so it is the starting of the joint-relationship and events around the apocalyptic event.
It's a nice and easy story to follow.
MC isn't the "hero" cliche and cares more about those close to him. But isn't completely numb to others.
I enjoyed both the male and female narrators and their voice ranges. Especially the child, I loved the little guy's adorable voice! Made me think of my nephew and want to visit him!

Enjoyable listen
You know when you read the blurb about a book and go…hmmm, interesting? That’s what I thought until I listened to this audiobook. Interesting quickly turned into I can’t stop listening. The way the world turned chaotic and the need to escape the mass lawlessness before they get caught in it keeps you engaged in the story. Then you add in just the right amount of spicy-times for good measure. They have a long way to go which means we get several more books (I hope) to continue the journey. Zachary Zaba and Erin Bateman gave their usual impeccable performance to give the characters and the story more depth.

It grasps you to not let you go
It is such an amazing situation, dream come through and then the end of the world, so it turns I to a fight for survival. Super engaging that it keeps you on edge, and quite pleasant. Narrators do a great job to give personality to the characters too. I definitely recommend it!

I recommend this series
Right up front before you read any further just know that I recommend this book to anybody thinking about giving it a shot. A little context for my review. I tend to take it easy on the first and last book of any series as not every series makes it to “The End” and the first of anything can be a shaky endeavor. I also try to make clear the distinction between the quality of the writing/performance of the author/narrator and my personal tastes should they differ. In this case they did not. This is the first book that I have listened to by this author and the male narrator is also new to me as well. I think that the writing was solid all around. The book was a nice little story that starts at the beginning of the post-apocalyptic environment. The second and third books are already out and available in eBook form. I'm hoping that this audio book does well enough for the team behind the story to continue to give the rest of the series the audible treatment. As I said Zachary is a narrator that I'm not familiar with and I believe this is the first time where I've seen Erin Bateman work with another narrator in a dual narration format. I have greatly enjoyed her performances in the past and the surprise of having a second narrator for this project was awesome all around. The story basically follows 3 individuals with the main character being a gentleman author from a broken home who has found himself in a position where he can safely help out two of his friends during what appears to be the beginnings of an apocalypse. There is a parity between real life and the story with regard to the pandemic lockdowns. Obviously, considering that this story is ultimately being told in a post-apocalyptic type of world it goes beyond what we have experienced ourselves. That's not the only distinction but I don't want to spoil the story for anybody who's willing to give it a shot. Lastly, I'm just going to say well done to everybody who had a hand in bringing this story to us the audible listeners and I'm definitely looking forward to what comes next.

A slow start
While the book is not lacking in spicy content, it takes a while before the action starts. But I have to admit, I'm looking forward to the sequel.
