Summary

She never expected to fall for a client, but now that she has, she needs him more than ever.

Years of adversity have molded Henley McClure into the attentive, conscientious psychologist she is today. She lives for her daughter, Jasna, and her work at The Refuge, an exclusive retreat for victims of PTSD. Her life is fulfilling...if a little lonely. But the only man who’s captured her interest, the most standoffish of the mountain retreat’s seven owners, lives in self-imposed isolation. It will take a little vulnerability on her own part, a dead car battery, and the surprising help of her daughter to break through Finn’s defenses.

His Coast Guard career ended in a tragedy that ground Finn “Tonka” Matlick’s life to a halt. For years, his only solace has been the animals he tends to at The Refuge...and admiring Henley from afar. He had no plans to risk potential heartache ever again, until an incident at the retreat had him clinging to Henley like the broken man he is. The kind, patient therapist and her sweet, thoughtful daughter may be the only ones capable of putting him back together.

As Finn slowly heals, and he and Henley grow ever closer, someone is watching. Waiting. Planning. Evil in the making who ultimately wants to watch the world burn, one victim at a time. And they’ll start by targeting one of the people Finn loves most.

Deserving Henley is the second book in the Refuge series. Each book is a stand-alone, with no cliff-hanger endings.

Great story

I am a big fan of this series. I love the whole premise behind it. Finn and Henley are so sweet together. I loved hearing how they worked throw their past and let go to be together. And Finn and her daughter are so cute. The male narrators were good but the female was not my favorite. I am looking forward to the next installment.

Like K-9 type stories

Susan Stoker has her formula down pat snd engaging characters. She’s has a good enough story and should leave out the explicit details that contribute nothing to the plot.

Good story

The second book in the series. I was very excited for Tonka’s story. Well all these guys but being an animal lover myself he holds a special place in my heart. It was wonderful learning about him and his secret desire for Henley. Always protecting.

This is a cute story. I enjoyed listening to it. The narration here is done wonderfully. Ramona Master, Teddy Hamilton and Aaron Shedlock are the narrators. I look forward to more in this series.

Great story, surprised by ending.

I love all things Susan Stoker, she’s an automatic purchase for me. I did really like this book. I love the whole idea of the Refuge. As I am from a military family and have many friends that serve or have served as well. The idea of it is amazing to me.

Henley and Finn are great together and Finn and Jas together were completely adorable.

I Love Teddy Hamilton, and the other male narrator was great too. The female narrator however, left a lot to be desired when put with two great male narrators. It’s sad to want to skip the chapters when she was speaking just so I didn’t have to listen to her. I do, however, love when there are two narrators. I just like it a lot better when they are both really good. And her books deserve a better female narrator.

Also, like some others I was absolutely thrown that Stoker has thrown in what seems to be some sort of mystery that I assume she plans to weave a bit through all the rest of the Refuge books until the last one. And since I read/listen to all of her books this isn’t really a huge issue for me. I will however be surprised if it’s not the VERY obvious person that she has put in place to be behind this mystery. I would have liked it to have been less in your face about who it was. That was my only issue. Then again maybe I’m wrong. But hopefully the mystery about why this person is there and doing these things is not quite so easily solved. 🤞

Another tough topic

Once I was reading could not stop. Story explained a lot of the reasons for PTSD that should help people understand.

Solid story

A solid 4-star story like most of Susan’s books. Loved the male narrators, two of my favs. The female narrator was fine, but not for this character. She did a great little girl, for Henley’s daughter, but found her to seem too young to be Henley. Would listen to other things by her if she did New Adult books.

Another hit!

Susan did again; another book to add to my "will listen again" pile. It didn't have quite the same "oomph" some of her others have had, but it's a solid story with a feel good ending and the narrators did well delivering.

I enjoyed the story however as an animal lover it was difficult to listen to some of it but I'm glad that it didn't go into too much detail
