Summary

Everson Croft here, professor of mythology and behind-the-scenes wizard.

Show me an amateur conjurer, and I'll stop him before he gets himself killed.

That's the idea, anyway. But New York City isn't what it used to be, and I don't mean the recent crash.

Amateur casters are calling up creatures they shouldn't be able to. And there's been a murder at the city's most hallowed cathedral, a message in blood on the victim's back the NYPD wants me to interpret, like yesterday.

Something tells me I'm in over my head. And that's not just Chinatown's newest mob boss, a scary-powerful vampire, or my possessed cat talking.

No matter how much magic I hurl, worse keeps chasing bad, and I'm amassing enemies like they're aluminum cans.

Did I mention the end of the world might be nigh?

Damn. Maybe I'm the amateur here.

Finally, something similar to Dresden files

This series enters the select club of Dresden files and Alex Verus. I like that some of the elements are so familiar that there is no need for lenghty explanations. Fast paced, good narrator and good story.

I wonder if Harry would get along with Everson?

I liked this voice actor and was pleasantly surprised about how well he did a feminine sounding voice.

About the story itself. If you like The Dresden Files series you'll likely enjoy this too. I found myself wondering what would happen if these two wizards met :)

A cool main character and a great story!

What did you like most about Demon Moon?

The story was great and the main character is cool. Not cool in some sort of self-possessed way just a great guy. He's got too much going on to handle but he's getting on with it. I love his sense of humour about himself and the situations he's in which comes out in his internal dialogue.

What did you like best about this story?

I like the balance between the normal world that we live in and the slightly underground goings on that Prof Croft has to deal with. The story melds a murder mystery with an action pace which is great.

What does James Patrick Cronin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

I liked the performance. The narrator has a good voice to listen too and brings a sense of pace to the book that I really enjoyed. I think his voice also sounds great for the character of Prof Croft.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed at some of the normal and not so normal situations that Prof Croft is in. I laughed mainly at his internal dialogue when in fights and when going into his review meeting.

Any additional comments?

If you like the Dresden files give this a go.

If you like the Dresden files you I think you will like this. It has a similar setting, It has many of the same tropes but is not just a copy and holds it own and an interesting story. The world is a little different and the rules and details are not the same which helps keep this fresh and interesting and not a mere Dresden clone.

The writing is well done and suits Professor Everson Croft’s tale of what is going on perfectly. The story has great pacing keeping the story moving and means there is never a boring moment. The whole cast of characters are just right for their role in the story, not all of them are likeable but they are all everything they should be and those that we get a closer look at have depth and personality, If I had to pick my favourite characterful bits it would be the interactions between the Prof and his cat they are just great.

The narration is good, clear and easy to listen to, they are good at adding to the sense of immersion keeping you listing wanting to know what happens next, James Patrick Cronin really has the main character, Prof Croft down perfectly, you can really hear their personality in every word and I did not notice any errors in the recording.

I very much enjoyed listening to this book and I recommend especially it to anyone that likes the Dresden files or similar books. I am definitely going to pick up the other books in this series when I get a chance to find out what happens next.

All in all, this is a great urban fantasy story.

I enjoyed it. this is a cross between a teeny bit of Indian a Jones meets a fair bit of Harry dresden but it works and I would definitely by future books in this series.

great narrator

A pale copy of Dresden files and the books about Versus. Nothing new or original. Great narrator makes it a pleasant background noise.

Wizardry for grown ups.

I think that those of us who where technically to old to read and enjoy the HP books if the boy wizard will certainly enjoy these stories on Prof Croft. The magic feels real and the characters really come to life with J.P.Cronin's narration. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend to any one who has a love for magic.

Fabulous start to a series, very much credit worth

Demon Moon is the first in the Prof Croft series by Brad Magnarella. This was a new to me author and narrator. I was immensely pleased that they both landed on the top of my TBL stack as I will be looking to add to my listening collection from both of them. I’m in luck that it appears this author has selected the same great narrator, James Patrick Cronin for the other books currently available in the series.

The story caught me right away and kept me wanting to know what would happen next. I wanted to see at what point the Professor would just say “Bag it, I’m going to the bar to drink instead of face the world.” Yet, he kept going, kept digging for information, sticking his nose and well-being in deeper. James Patrick Cronin did an excellent job at bringing forth the wit and sarcasm of Professor Croft with his narration. The tone and delivery of the words on the pages only enhanced the story. I will be diving in to see how Professor Croft fairs in the rest of his series.

Entertaining start to a new urban fantasy series

Demon Moon by Brad Magnarella is a slick urban fantasy with a pretty ordinary hero who has some decidedly extraordinary problems.

It's almost impossible to listen to a story about a contemporary, American, crime-fighting, wizard at the mercy of a shadowy magical organisation without thinking of The Dresden Files, Alex Verus, or even Nazri Noor's Darkling Mage series. Whilst this book doesn't quite have the thrill of The Dresden files, it does compare favourably by avoiding the grinding sexism of Butcher's series. I also found it easier to settle into than Noor's first book, though it lacks the wise-cracking humour.

Set in a near-future version of New York, Professor Everson Croft isn't quite all that stands between good and evil in the city, but he is often the only one who actually turns up to do anything about it. So far that's gotten him arrested for murder and made him perennially late for class, which tends to cause problems when you're the teacher. His main side-kicks in this series are an oversized talking cat and a homicide detective, neither of whom seem to fully trust him but both understand that he's their best hope of staying alive.

There were only a couple of moments that threw me out of the story, one of which involved Croft's inexplicable ability to drive a car in an emergency on one occasion but not another.

The narrator, James Patrick Cronin, does a great job and really helps bring Croft's world to life. His female voices are rather dull compared with the male ones, but it's almost always tricky for narrators to perform the opposite-sex parts with as much charisma. He held my attention throughout and was easy to listen to, which helped me fly through this audiobook in a couple of days.

Demon Moon isn't an edge-of-your-seat thriller, but it's an entertaining mystery full of twists, turns, and the occasional winged-beastie. As the first audiobook in a new series Demon Moon does a good job of setting the scene for Croft's later escapades, and though it functions as a standalone novel, this story ends with a clear run at the next instalment. I'm looking forward to the adventures that Croft, Tabitha, and Vega get up to next, and have already put book two on my wishlist.

I'd recommend it to anyone who likes urban fantasy and is looking for an easy, enjoyable new series along the lines of their favourites.
