Summary
The Isle of Wight has always felt like a safe place to live for keen dog-walker and reluctant sleuth Susan. But after being involved in the investigation of a troubling crime near her old home, Susan decides to move to the peaceful village of Bishopstone.
Susan loves the sense of community and immediately throws herself into village life, volunteering at the local primary school and joining the choir of St Jude’s. So many secrets!
Susan, the canny sleuth from Death at Castle Cove, Mary Grand’s previous crime novel set on the Isle of Wight, has moved from Ventnor to a village in West Wight where she is making a new life after the end of her long marriage. As it turns out, she has not left behind her suspicious mind , sharp eyes and ears and compulsion to investigate .
We know from the brief atmospheric opening that the innocent evening study of bats in the church tower by the local scared -of-heights headmaster isn’t going to end well! His body is later found on the ground below . The web of intrigue and hidden secrets discovered by Susan as she digs and delves becomes increasingly intricate as suspect after suspect seems to be the murderer. I certainly hadn’t guessed that it was …….!
The Isle of Wight setting is refreshing, different and very imaginable. There are dog walks on the beach, (and lots of dogs), the changing moods of the sea, the Castle, the dependence on ferries for the Mainland, and the residents’ love for their beautiful island.
All the characters , not just the suspects, are fully fleshed out . I was moved by the part of the story where Susan, still fragile , and her not happy ex-husband talk together and he apologises for having hurt her.
The narration is well in tune with the story, but I found some of the voices over-cosy and saccharine, especially that of Susan’s ally, the elderly Alice.
