Summary
The first novel in the enthralling Follet Valley Series, by TV/radio regular Ian Moore.
Richard is a middle-aged Englishman who runs a B&B in the fictional Val de Follet in the Loire Valley. Nothing ever happens to Richard, and really that’s the way he likes it. One day, however, one of his older guests disappears, leaving behind a bloody handprint on the wallpaper. Another guest, the exotic Valérie, persuades a reluctant Richard to join her in investigating the disappearance. Richard remains a dazed passenger in the case until things become really serious and someone murders Ava Gardner, one of his beloved hen...and you don’t mess with a fellow’s hens!
Unpausable mystery set in rural France, by TV/radio regular and best-selling author Ian Moore - perfect for fans of Richard Osman's The Thursday Murder Club, Julia Chapman, or M.C. Beaton. Everyone is wanting mort!
Critic reviews
"A very funny page-turner. Fantastique!" (Adam Kay, comedian and author of This Is Going to Hurt)

It’s alright I suppose.
For me this is one of those books that I wish I could un-read … all those hours! Still it’s pleasant enough. I think if you like The Thursday Murder Club then you’ll like this. And the author / reader does a great ‘glamorous French female’ accent.

Enjoyable and easy
I listened to this book whilst painting my flat. It was perfect, didn’t require too much attention, moved along briskly with humour and intrigue. The film references were amusing too.
Not an Agatha Christie but enjoyable nonetheless.

Enjoyed this book in the end
I found this book a little difficult to get into. I think the author should consider getting someone else to narrate it which would have helped.

Throughly enjoyed this book. Great characters, entertaining and very funny. If you like death in paradise books you’ll love this, as it does remind me of them in a way. I look forward to the next one.

I really enjoyed this. Great turn of phrase, good self-effacing humour, over-the-top characters. Awwwww, and the hens!!!

Great japes and a fabulous light-hearted read
Really enjoyed the book. Some good twists and turns and some good laugh out loud moments. Ian reads it well but, if I may be so bold, I think it would have been even better with an experienced character actor. Absolutely acknowledge that it’s personal taste and subjective but that’s my opinion. Good book. Recommend.

did not like the narration.
struggled to finish, the narration by the author is not good, being a good writer does not equal being a good narrator. Rushed, flat and just gives a feeling of being read out loud. the story may be better than my rating, but the narration just killed it for me.

Easy going listen but little substance
An ok story that moves at a good pace. Quite predictable in places, although the main character is a bit slow to catch on to the obvious. The biggest irritation is the performance, why has it suddenly become the trend for authors to read their own work, rather than an actor who has trained to deliver text? Not the most engaging voice and some of the attempted accents are appalling, like listening to your dad try to do his shoddy party piece!

Ridiculous and enormously fun
Wild, convoluted and imaginative twist on a cozy mystery. Ian Moore was an excellent narrator for his book - the right tone, dry humor and male confusion.
Very very entertaining.
I am hoping for more from Ian in future.

narrator
Hire a pro. I'm sure if I wrote a book I would feel only I could get the voices right. I get why authors would want to narrate, but its a mistake. Some get it right, Neil Gaiman comes to mind, but most don't.
Moore did ok, but I could hear the sound of "I've read this 1000 times" in the delivery. The engineering could use some work too. So, the story, I may have been able to get into but the narration kept from going past chapter 7 or 8. Pay the pros, they can make a bad book okay and a good one great!

Laborious humor
Juts OK. I liked the Thursday murder club much more. This is not as tightly written and I grew bored of the tedious nature abs the reluctant sort of self-pity of the main character.

Hilarious
Loved this book. Laughed out loud several times. The author reads it, he's a radio comic. English humor at its best

Laugh out loud funny
The narrator’s reading are so funny and the characters are well-conceived, warm and sympathetic. Like taking a vacay in the Loire Valley.

Deliciously Entertaining
Lively, mysterious & comical, Richard & Valerie are the perfect sleuthing team. The characters orbiting the plot are deeply interesting as well.
This one has you laughing while sorting out a very puzzling crime.

Funny cozy mystery
Fun and light cozy mystery of a British expat in France. Draws humor from pairing a straight-laced, somewhat befuddled, middle-aged English man with a smart, capable, and charismatic French woman. Charming story and narration.

Definitely not a substitute for Thursday Murder
This book was listed as a great read if you liked the Thursday Murder Club books. Meh. This book was ok but nothing close. I feel like this book would have been better with a different narrator. I feel like the author was too droll and missed a lot of the sarcasm in his lead characters voice. Overall, it was fine but I found myself drifting instead of really being concerned over what was happening.
