About this listen

The first novel in the enthralling Follet Valley Series, by TV/radio regular Ian Moore.

Richard is a middle-aged Englishman who runs a B&B in the fictional Val de Follet in the Loire Valley. Nothing ever happens to Richard, and really that’s the way he likes it. One day, however, one of his older guests disappears, leaving behind a bloody handprint on the wallpaper. Another guest, the exotic Valérie, persuades a reluctant Richard to join her in investigating the disappearance. Richard remains a dazed passenger in the case until things become really serious and someone murders Ava Gardner, one of his beloved hen...and you don’t mess with a fellow’s hens!

Unpausable mystery set in rural France, by TV/radio regular and best-selling author Ian Moore - perfect for fans of Richard Osman's The Thursday Murder Club, Julia Chapman, or M.C. Beaton. Everyone is wanting mort!

So entertaining 😁

I really enjoyed this. Great turn of phrase, good self-effacing humour, over-the-top characters. Awwwww, and the hens!!!

Nice

Listening to this book is like sitting on a hillside being bathed in a warm summer breeze of metaphors and similes. In all cases apart from the first, almost terminal, slur directed at muesli (a well-worn, cliche’d, bird-cage comparison) his descriptors are original, clever, witty and fun. Sure there’s a story in there with a beginning, middle and end; and likeable characters popping in and out, but it’s the colourful comparisons that made it really stand out for me. Having Ian Moore reading it definitely adds to the appeal (his vocal characterisation of Valerie is disturbingly alluring). After a good session of listening, I find it almost impossible not to spend the rest of the day in my best Inspector Clouseau voice.

Excellent

The best escapism story. It flows along beautifully and I’m looking forward to the next book

Great story, poor narration

I made it to the end on the strength of the story but the narration was so soporific, I almost didn’t manage it. I know it’s his book but he doesn’t have an interesting tone so I hope the next one will have a better reader.
