About this listen

Reborn into a world of magical skills and superhuman abilities, a young man battles the forces of darkness, in this action-packed, post-apocalyptic fantasy.

On Earth, Zeke Blackwood was a star athlete who devoted his every waking minute to baseball . . . before his tragic death and the devastation of the planet. Eons later, he was resurrected in a magical realm known as the Radiant Isles. There, Zeke survived two years of unrelenting combat through sheer grit and determination. Battling trolls in a labyrinth of caverns, he gained superhuman abilities with every victory, ultimately equipping him for a war between good and evil.

Now, along with his companions—a beautiful archer named Abby and Pudge, a dire bear cub who’s become soul-bonded to him—Zeke engages in quests to help the defenseless against the monstrous creatures and near-immortal beings who prey upon them. But his latest selfless act has brought him into conflict with the Crystal Spiders, an assassins’ guild that’s been kidnapping people for some unknown purpose.

Before Zeke can unravel that mystery, he’s summoned by Silas Martel—a monk of the mighty Temple of the Sun Goddess and spymaster for its head priestess and ruler of the Radiant Isles, demigod Lady Constance—for a dangerous mission. He must rescue Constance’s daughter from Abraham Micayne, Lord of the Dead. The treacherous task will take Zeke, Abby, and Pudge through zombie-infested lands, with the Crystal Spiders in hot pursuit. And even though every brush with death only makes Zeke more powerful, nothing can prepare him for the macabre horrors of Micayne’s dominion . . .

If you listened to the first one you know what you’re in for. Yes he brings up baseball a bit and the fact his dad was a douche.

Thoroughly enjoyed this instalment.

Narrator is excellent (he is one of my “oh it’s him so it will be worth a credit” dudes) and the story is coming together nicely.

The whinging about zeke and Abby’s relationship seems weird to me. They both have issues as covered by their individual histories and are very much playing it by ear so to speak. I don’t see the problem.

Got the third one and looking forward to more stories set in this world.

Good stuff

I found myself skipping chapters just to get to the end of the book quickly. The MC’s back and forth feelings about Abby just felt so forced.

Poor interactions

I'm thrilled to have discovered this series and believe it has potential. It's disappointing to see that it's not receiving as much attention as it deserves in terms of reviews. While there are some valid criticisms, such as the laboured relationship tension and slightly contrived bringing together of the team, I believe these are minor points that can be easily overlooked.

Personally, I enjoy the darker elements of the book and appreciate that it avoids the mass-produced 'holier than thou' approach. While Zeke may not be Logen Ninefingers aka The Bloody-Nine (the crème de la crème for me) he's a young pragmatist who plays to his strengths and is evolving from a brute into a Paladin of sorts. It's refreshing to see a recognition of the new world dynamics, and I think the grimdark direction is a good one and i think it should fully lean into it.
Overall, I enjoyed the book and can't wait for the next instalment.

Enjoyable instalment with potential to be great

Enjoyed the first book and this one is definitely an improvement.

Good character development and side characters overall.

Enjoying the arc of the story and look forward to the next instalment.

Getting Better and Better

The performance was great. Eric is as always superb. I did think the pacing was a little off in comparison to the first book. In addition I think some of the character motivations were a bit laboured - again especially on comparison to the first book. I would still like to see where it goes

I enjoyed it ...but

Really enjoyed this book it's quite dark and the characters are far from perfect but they keep trying to do the Wright thing but in the end I think their all just a bit murder hobo

Dark & gritty

sadly didn't enjoy this one as much as the first in the series.

I expect quite a bit of repetition in a Litrpg, when it comes to status/levels.

But the constant nail hammering regarding Zeke's dad, Zeke's training for baseball and his work ethic, and his relationship with Abby got a lot more tedious than listening to stats being read for 5 minutes straight.

A little too repetitive

if you were expecting any intelligent decisions, don't the main character seems to just follow along and make beyond stupid decisions that he should die for but doesn't because of course he's the main character. don't get me started on his companion, who just takes advantage of him while he simps got through the first book it was below average with a frustrating character making.

a boring one dimensional the main character

I enjoyed it, but it didn't grip me like the first book did ... hopefully, the next book will be better

so so

Where book 1 was fast paced action with some foreshadowing of interesting characters yet to meet book two's pacing falls off a cliff. With a lot of convoluted internal dialogue which seems to be repeated every chapter everything just takes so long. Finished it with a lot of effort but dropping the series here.

Book 2 drops off
