Summary

The best-selling William Shaw returns with a thrilling investigation in the unmissable new series.

You can run.

The two boys never fitted in. Seventeen, the worst age, nothing to do but smoke weed; at least they have each other. The day they speed off on a moped with a stolen mobile, they're ready to celebrate their luck at last. Until their victim comes looking for what's his - and ready to kill for it.

You can hide.

On the other side of Kent's wealth divide, DS Alexandra Cupidi faces the strangest murder investigation of her career. A severed limb, hidden inside a modern sculpture in Margate's Turner Contemporary. No one takes it seriously - not even the artwork's owners, celebrity dealers who act like they're above the law.

You can die.

But as Cupidi's case becomes ever more sinister, as she wrangles with police politics and personal dilemmas, she can't help worrying about those runaway boys. Seventeen, the same age as her own headstrong daughter. Alone, on the marshes, they're pawns in someone else's game. Two worlds are about to collide.

Kent and its social divisions are brilliantly captured in Deadland, a crime thriller that's as ingeniously unguessable as it is moving and powerful.

Compelling reading

A brilliant, fast paced book that held my attention throughout. The characters are really well drawn and develop as the story progresses. Thoughtful and really well narrated. A most enjoyable listen.

Great Story

Really enjoyed the story lots of twists but the voice of the female police officer (not the main character) was more like a sulking teenager. Not how I imagined a police officer would be so made that particular character out of place in the book for me.

wow...2nd in series and I will go straight to no 3

Sometimes I read/hear the first book in a series and after the second I am disappointed and looking for another. Not with this one. The second book was equally as good as the first if not better. Again the author tackles current problems as well as writing good plots. Notice the pleural because there is more than one as usual. onto no 3 immediately.

The art of brilliant writing

Another outstanding book by William Shaw, the second in the DS Alex Cupidi series. Even better than the first, with excellent, authentic characters, and a fascinating plot that weaves together beautifully.

Home Grown Crime at it's best....

I have to start by saying the narrator absolutely nails this book and it's characters for me. There's something about her voice, combined with the beautiful bleakness of that Thames Estuary neck of the woods and the incredibly believable main characters, that I found strangely comforting.....
I love the two female leads in this series, seeing their strengths and vulnerabilities as you follow them through the pages. Everything about the characters in this book feels so VERY human.
Don't be mislead by my use of the word 'comfort' though...this is a crime story, it's violent and hard hitting, the author says it as it is and at times I found myself holding my breath in anticipation of what was coming next.
I can't wait to get started on the next volume.

Danger at Dungerness

I loved this book I couldn't put it down.two young lads, bored and he'll bent on making mischief, find them selves in deep trouble after stealing a mobile phone. They get pursued by an extremely violent man who has connections with a famous model and art collector. The boys hide from this man in the hope they can throw him off their trail. Very good narration, great story.

A Binge Listen

Occasionally a story will wake you in the night so that you have to find out what's going on before you go back to sleep. This was one of thise stories. Told from the point of view of the two female police officers and also from two runaway teenage boys, William Shaw gives you enough clues to draw your own conclusions, but not enough to finally unravel the plot. As someone from south of the river I enjoyed the geographical locations and i thought Jasmine Blackborow did a great job with the accents.

Gets better and better

I love this series. The characters are well rounded and believable and the story works and intrigues whilst remaining plausible.
This narrator is fantastic. She’s an absolute marvel at voices and accents which really brings the story to life.
