Summary

Let the world cower in fear, for the Dark Lord has returned!

My name is Robert Grailmont. Since I was young, I felt a call to serve, to be a respectable and dependable leader. But when my ambitions were derailed by corruption and greed, I found a new calling—one from another world.

"Dark Lord, we need you!"

Now I must take up the crown. Duskhaven, the land of my ancestors, was conquered and enslaved by Alruna, Goddess of Light. With the blessing of the Goddess of Night, I shall retake our land and bring forth Ascendant Queens, my lovers and avatars of darkness’ might.

This epic tome contains all three books in the Dark Lord’s Commands series. Dare you plunge into night eternal?

a solid story, with a good arc

I enjoyed the premise of this one, especially when it turned out the hero could take advantage of his connections back to earth, and even with a return to earth.

the characters are pretty well defined and interesting, but the pacing slips at times, with focus zooming in on logistical details then speed running through other key parts.

there is some frustration around how his magic and the magic of his wives feels underpowered - they're supposed to be near demigods, and the enemy beings it turns out are LESSER beings. and yet his group struggles even in fights with basic humans. sometimes this makes sense (with the magic artefacts) but the rest of the time it feels like they SHOULD just be able to trounce the enemy. this makes some parts of the plot feels contrived in order to make there be a challenge.

where the book shines is when the MC is leaning into his strategic thinking and adapting. planning and out thinking his opponents, as well as being calm and collected. he isn't a proper fighter and that's actually quite cool to see.

overall ok glad I listened to the whole thing and enjoyed the world building. a definite recommend but be prepared to adjust pacing expectations.
