About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

This audiobook includes a bonus conversation between the author and Jack Carr.

The Sunday Times best-selling series returns - and Orphan X faces his most challenging mission ever....

Evan Smoak is a man with many identities and a challenging past. As Orphan X, he was a government assassin for the off-the-books Orphan Program. After he broke with the program, he adopted a new name and a new mission - the Nowhere Man, helping the most desperate in their times of trouble.

Having just survived an attack on his life, and the complete devastation of his base of operations, as well as his complicated (and deepening) relationship with his neighbour, Mia Hall, Evan isn't interested in taking on a new mission.

But one finds him anyway.

Aragon Urrea is a kingpin of a major drug-dealing operation in South Texas. He's also the patron of the local area - supplying employment in legitimate operations, providing help to the helpless, a rough justice to the downtrodden, and a future to a people normally with little hope. He's complicated - a not completely good man, who does bad things for often good reasons.

However, for all his money and power, he is helpless when one of the most vicious cartels kidnaps his innocent 18-year-old daughter, spiriting her away into the armoured complex that is their headquarters in Mexico. With no other way to rescue his daughter, he turns to the Nowhere Man.

Now not only must Evan figure out how to get into the impregnable fortress of a heavily armed, deeply paranoid cartel leader, but he must decide if he should help a very bad man - no matter how just the cause.

Scott Brick is his usual excellent self in this Orphan X performance.

The story is much better than the last Orphan X book where he found some of his family. This is more a return to form for the uber capable loner living to a set of standards.

The plot is a decent one. Sometimes as preposterous as other books. Sufficiently different to be interesting. As always Hurwitz dwells on technical details. This adds realism but is a bit gun porn.

Characters are sufficiently distinctive. Joey is an annoying teenager but growing up. X has problems dealing with it in a well written way.

Some parts of the finale get a little silly but this is Orphan X. It's all quite silly. Overall I enjoyed this book.

Well performed and interesting

This book is slightly different to the previous ones, a bit more intellectual and emotional but still action packed. It is great getting more into the past of Orphan X. Looking forward to the next one!

I didn't enjoy this book at all! I don't know who the characters were because there isn't anywhere to see who's who!!!!

What was that all about???

This book is, for me, when we really get a fleshed out Evan Smoak. This is where everything clicks with his character; his impossible wish to be a normal person, his loneliness, his double life, his father role, his wish for a friend, his need to keep doing what he’s doing. Everything about his inner conflict is written so well and we get real intimate with how he functions. Probably in the strongest way throughout the series.

The other characters are not necessarily on the same level, though. Joey goes a bit over the top with the joking and annoyance - she ends up not being believable. The evil drug lord man also feels a bit out there - not a super character.

But even if we have to suspend our disbelief sometimes, what we really want is seeing how Evan solves problems in the universe Gregg Hurwitz has created for him. We want to see him succeed, and we get to see that

Best Smoak in terms of character development

The story takes a little more time than other X books to get going but it is well worth the wait. As to really enjoy any book you have to get to know the characters so you can enjoy the story. And this book has a lot of interesting new characters in it.
The big twist in the story was one I didn’t expect and made the story even more enjoyable.
The ongoing story of X’s relationships and understanding of normal everyday life are interesting and funny at times.
All in all, I thought this book was great and very well read.

Great book as usual

I was slightly worried this one wasn't going to live up to the rest after reading some of the negative comments but I was pleasantly surprised. Amazing book, amazing characters and amazing narrator! 👏

Just as good as all the rest!

I have listen to all the orphan X books and this one is as good as any . Not sure why people are moaning about how the author describes the scenes , he has always done this and it is one of the reasons I love these books .
