Summary

12,090 A.D.

It is a dark time for the world. Humanity is just crawling out from under 300 years of domination by the race of vampires known as the Nobility. The war against the vampires has taken its toll; cities lie in ruin, the countryside is fragmented into small villages and fiefdoms that still struggle against nightly raids by the fallen vampires - and the remnants of their genetically manufactured demons and werewolves.

Every village wants a Hunter - one of the warriors who have pledged their laser guns and their swords to the eradication of the Nobility. But some Hunters are better than others, and some bring their own kind of danger with them….

Enter D - a lone, mysterious vampire hunter, sought out by the desperate Doris Lang. Bitten by the vampire lord Count Lee, Doris is destined to her unholy fate.... Can D deliver her from her curse and bring her to salvation, or will she forever be part of the unholy dead?

Adapted from the novel and produced with a full cast of actors, immersive sound effects and cinematic music! From creator Hideyuki Kikuchi, one of Japan's leading horror authors.

Performed by Scott McCormick, David Cui Cui, Laura C. Harris, Ryan Carlo Dalusung, Eric Singdahlsen, Rob McFadyen, Amanda Forstrom, Jenna Sharpe, Peter Holdway, Terence Aselford, Eric Messner, Michael John Casey, Ken Jackson, Kay Eluvian, Megan Poppy, Jillian Levine-Sisson, James J. As good as the original.

Vampire Hunter d was one of my first animes I've ever seen. I opened the door just so many awesome culture rich things to me. And listening to this audiobook brought all those feels back. definitely check it out.

excited to get the vhd series in audio

I get the complaints about the narrator. But he grows on ya. I can't wait for the next two to drop on audible and hope they keep making more.

Narrator is not good

everything else is very good, the narrator does not suit the world and story. he mumbles and sounds like he has a cold through out most of the book

Long-time 'Vampire Hunter D' Fan Disappointed

When I discovered the 1985 anime film 'Vampire Hunter D' in the early 1990's, I instantly became a fan of the character and the world. Since then I've enjoyed the books, manga, and the sequel anime film 'Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust'. When I first joined Audible, I immediately searched for the 'VHD' series but it didn't exist yet. So, I was excited when I recently saw that not only the audio books were coming, but there was this dramatized version available. I'm a big fan of the recently Audible dramatized 'Sandman' series based on the comics from Neil Gaiman. This isn't even close to that producion level, it definitely is a lower budget producion. While low budget doesn't always mean bad, but unfortunately this one isn't one of those diamonds in the rough.

The story itself is a perfectly fine sci-fi fantasy/horror adventure. While being slightly edited, it pretty much is exactly the same as the original book. However the weakness here is the performances. It is a bit of a mixed bag. The narrator might be the biggest issue here. He is very nasally and it does sound like he's suffering from a severe cold. It becomes distracting. The actors playing Doris, Dan and Greco are okay, although sometimes they do have a tendency to overcook the American southern accent and drawl a bit. The best of the voice actors are probably the ones playing Count Magnus Lee and L'Armica. The one voice that seemed miscast was D. The actor was good, I just personally didn't feel he fit D, he just came across as too young sounding. Perhaps its because I have the voices that performed D in the animes burned into my head. D was always had a reserved and adult voice. Perhaps they were going off the constant "beautiful" or "youthful" descriptions of D which influenced thier casting. The actor portraying Count Magnus Lee might've been a better fit for D.

In conclusion, the story is good fun, but the performances and lower budget producion bring the overall experience down. If Dark Horse decides to continue with the 'VHD' series in this format, I'll definitely be skipping those. I think the regular unabridged and non-dramatized versions of these books might be the better experience moving forward.

Worth it

I was hesitant to buy this when I heard the narration was bad but I’m glad I went ahead and got it anyway. I suppose his voice might annoy some people but I found it perfectly fine and appropriate. Don’t miss out on a great listen.

better than the manga maybe

what I really enjoyed was that not only was this accurate to the manga but it was also done in a high quality way which gave more detail than I remember ...or things I just didn't pick up on through subtext

The Narrator Ruined It For Me

This was a disappointment. The narrator sounds like his nose is plugged up. Plus it sounds like he's struggling to read the words for the first time. Bad performance. The narrator ruins an otherwise fun audiobook. I will be asking for my credit back.

narrator ruins it

Everything is solid except the narration.
Mediocre tonal projection with a laundry pin locking his nose shut.
It's difficult to get past the sounds of a narrator who dearly needs to blow their nose and take some sinus meds..

A Classic for a Reason

If you like gothic, western, post-apocalyptic, sci-fi, vampire hunting action, you're going to love this!

Kikuchi somehow fuses all of these genres into one coherent vision.
