Summary

He’s raising a baby, not looking for love.…

I don’t want a serious relationship, and certainly not with the single dad next door. But one look at Gordo? I’m smitten. Even though I might be a tough looking tattoo artist, I know that the ink does a lot to hide my own insecurities. It doesn’t matter how much Gordo seems to like me - I can’t bring myself to make a move.

Talking has never come easy to me - and I mean that literally. But Gordo doesn’t seem fazed by my speech problems or the mess in my head, and soon we’re forming a deep connection. But I learned a long time ago that nothing lasts forever…and when a blast from Gordo’s past shows up, it proves that everything was too good to be true.

At least, that’s what the old me would say. This time, I know that Gordo and his little baby are worth fighting for. I’m willing to walk through fire to get what I want. But can a tattoo artist with a checkered past really be any guy’s happily ever after?

Daddy Ink is the first of the Get Ink’d m/m romance series. The Get Ink’d crew are misfits from all walks of life who come together to create amazing art. They’re a family born of love, loss, and ink. In this first in series, ambitious single dad Gordo has met his match in heavily inked Javi, and sparks are ready to fly.

Amazing

Wow I loved this book. It's the first time I've read anything from this author and I really enjoyed it. Javi broke my heart with all his struggles, I just wanted to wrap him up in a massive hug. Gordo I wanted to smack sometimes but I still loved him. He was such a great support for Javi and I think Julie-Anna helped most of all. I'm goin to read the next book now because I need to know more about Christian and Dane.

Overcoming Obstacles

Daddy Ink is the first book in the Get Ink’d series and the first book I’ve read by Ali Lyda, an unknown author to me. I’m so glad I took a chance on this book because I enjoyed it immensely. Gordo is a single dad, recently divorced, trying to balance the needs of a newborn and starting his own business. Life is stressful and overwhelming, and Gordo is at his wit’s ends. It doesn’t help that the neighbor keeps blasting music and ruining any chances Gordo has of sleeping, something he hasn’t been getting enough since he is the sole caretaker for his infant daughter. Gordon would never have imagined that banging on his neighbor’s door to demand his neighbor turn down the music would change his life. Javi is a single tattoo artist with a difficult past. He grew up in the foster care system being relentlessly bullied for his severe stutter. Learning sign language and finding his family at the Get Ink’d tattoo shop went a long way to help him move forward with his life, but a lot of the pain from his past still haunts him. These two men together have enough baggage to fill a walk-in closet, but despite all the obstacles, they are exactly what they need.

I really enjoyed this book. It didn’t shy away from addressing some really serious issues, and the insta-attraction and desire Gordo and Javi felt for each other wasn’t the fix-all solution, in fact, even when the two men began their relationship, their romance was not the band-aid that they could slap over their emotional wounds and make everything “good.” Gordo and Javi had to work for their relationship, they hurt each other accidentally, had to communicate, listen, and understand before any apologies and forgiveness could happen. It was really refreshing to see characters calling out their significant others on bad behavior and holding each other accountable. This made the romance and love between the two men so much more authentic to me.

And although there was quite a bit of angst, there were still sweet and fluffy moments between the characters and Gordo’s infant daughter. Strong, sexy men melting over a baby is one of my favorite tropes, and this book had that in abundance. Plus, the sex scenes between Gordo and Javi were hot and steamy with a just a hint of D/s thrown in. There were a few spots in the book where the details were a little unbelievable or a tad corny, but honestly, I enjoyed this book so much that those little moments didn’t bother me. Especially when Ali Lyda did a good job of portraying the challenges of a sign language and deafness. I am not part of the deaf community, and will not speak on their behalf on how accurate Lyda was with all the details, but I’ve had to hire an ASL translator when I had to speak to a deaf individual for an official matter, and how Ali Lyda portrayed the translator in the book matched exactly with my experience.

Jack J. Maguire narrated the audiobook and does a fantastic job. I’ve never heard him narrate a book before, and I was quite happy with his performance. I enjoyed the smoothness of his voice and how he kept all the character’s voices distinct and consistent. He did a great job infusing his performance the right amount of energy for each scene, and kept me enthralled throughout the audiobook. The audio production was well done and I didn’t notice any glitches or outside noises that would interfere with the quality of the production.

Overall, I definitely recommend this book and I’m excited to start the next book in this series.

Angst

There are several tattoo shop series around and if you have any doubts about adding this one to your list of those to read, pay no attention to those doubts. This is going to be a great series. I loved both the main characters with all the baggage from their pasts. Both can be stubborn, unreasonable and often expect the worst and act on that expectation rather than seeing what the reality is, but their backstories are well developed and you completely understand why they act the way they do. It is heartbreaking to watch at times as they get in their own way and nearly ruin a great thing but finally they recognize what they have and the family they can build. The set up reminds me a bit of the Wrecked series set in a gym written by Kelly Fox in the sense that we get to meet various guys from the tattoo shop and I assume will learn their stories as time goes on. I had a good feeling that series would only get better and better and it has. I feel the same way about this one. Jack J. Maguire does a wonderful job with all the voices. He captures these guys pain and confusion as they try to work out their relationship and each of the secondary characters have distinct voice characterization.

a good start

I loved Gordo and Javi! they may be opposite in looks but are so wonderfully matched in heart! so many ups and downs and miscommunications but a great intro to Get Ink'd and the family at its core.
my only note is I didn't like how the narrator voiced a deaf character, and used the same voice to "voice" this side character even when they spoke in ASL. I felt it was disrespectful but in saying that I'm not part of the dead community so am unsure of how it would be taken, so I guess a warning might be needed for this listen.

I Struggled With This One

Reading the blurb on this it sounded right up my street but I really struggled to finish it.
I really liked Javi as a character but whilst I think we were supposed to feel sympathy for Gordo as a single farther, he just came across as a selfish and hurtful man towards Javi at times.
The storyline was very good and like the supporting characters and how they supported Javi with his stutter by learning ALS.
However the book seemed to drag on, which may have been due, in my opinion, to the narrator, whose voice was very monotonous and he didn’t differentiate between characters.
I will try the next book as I believe there is a different narrator.

Good performance

I had high hope for this story, but in the end was a little disappointed. The story was good (flowed well and had natural progression), but I had a hard time really enjoying the main characters. The side characters were much more enjoyable and I look forward to reading their stories, but this is not one that I will be re-reading.
The narration is the one thing that kept this story from being a complete flop in my opinion. Maguire did a great job with the characters and the varying voices.

A sweet story

A very sweet story even if the plot is a bit thin.

I loved sweet vulnerable Javi and spent a lot of the book being annoyed with Gordo.

I’m not in a hurry or excited to listen to the other books in the series but I might at some point because this was sweet but in my book it’s not a must listen to.

I loved Daddy Ink

I loved Daddy Ink. Ali Lyda is a new author to me and this is the second book I’ve read. I loved it and really can’t wait to read more. I don’t have any tattoos, but I seem to love reading books that include tattoos and this one did not disappoint. I loved Gordo and Javi and that both had issues and that their story took work and time and struggles. It was great to read and I really liked all the secondary characters and can’t wait to read their stories too. I definitely recommend it.
I really liked the narrator’s voice and the slight differences between characters. I enjoyed the pace and inflection. I would definitely listen to more books narrated by Jack J. Maguire.

the story is the only reason

The story is the ONLY reason I finished this book. This narrator is NOT my cup of tea but the story itself was great and I completed it. I will be grabbing book 2 in this series only because it is a different narrator and hopefully a better listen overall.
