Brilliant Book Right Up with Zombie Fallout Series

Where does DEAD: Winter rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

In top 5 easily

What did you like best about this story?

I like that this writer gets deeper and bit darker into humans as civilisation collapses along with those whom are better than they were.

What does Andrew McFerrin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

His narration is very good and keeps you encompassed to a well written, sad and happy story.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

yes

Any additional comments?

At the end of the world there just seems to be one crisis after another with little moments of happiness. Keeps you rooting for main characters and sickened by the darker ones but balanced so well it keeps you in right to the end.

Really enjoyed this book series

I thought this series was really well written, it took on a number of different perspectives and followed a number of groups, which I really liked however after much feedback TW cut down on this which I thought was disappointing, he also re-wrote the first few books following just one group each, these are 'Dead perspectives', 'Dead Vignettes' and 'Dead Geeks' I believe, so if you find lots of groups difficult to keep up with you might prefer these. He decided to keep it to 12 books which is a shame as it felt like there was a lot more these storylines could have given us. TW doesn’t shy away from the horror of what could happen and there is a lot of differences between the groups (which is why I'm unsure what others found so difficult about it, if they were all very similar it would have been confusing and boring but they are very very varied which I loved) but he doesn’t go too far into realms you don’t want to wander into (like the Zombie Fallout series by Tufo). I liked that it followed zombies on occasion too as well as groups of survivors and he wasn't afraid to kill people off when their time was done.

I like the spinoffs too, the 'Dead snapshots' are great, I like the attention to detail (the English one was pretty much on point re: lingo and culture) and I'm enjoying the new Dead series.

I love the multiple levels of the characters

My first thoughts on the cover of Dead: Winter? Man in snowy woods fighting off zombie wolves with a machete… This guy might be boned. Zombie wolves are just creepy. It is both really cool that the zombie wolves faces are hanging half off, and really disturbing. This should be an interesting book.

This book has multiple stories in it. The stories start where a previous book has left off. Each has multiple layers to them that help keep interest enthralled with the characters’ lives. My favorite character in this book is Juan. He’s awesome because even though he has a criminal past, he fights like hell to redeem himself and protect others. He’s an unwilling leader to a group on an island that survive because he’s willing to do whatever it takes to protect them.

Andrew McFerrin is the Narrator. His voices help keep the listener spell bound. I love the Egyptian accents that he uses. He is fast becoming one of my favorite narrators. The Author is TW Brown. Dead: Winter is part of the Dead series. It is eleven hours and thirty-four minutes long.

I love the multiple levels of the characters in this book. Each story helps show the struggles people would face in this new world AZ (After Zombies.). Warning – There is violence, death, blood, and horror within this book. There is also life, love, and laughter.

That’s what makes it awesome.

This book left me with the craving need to know what happens next in this series. It left me wondering about the supplies I’d need in an apocalyptic event. It left me wanting to make sure those I care for will be protected in any event. It also makes me wonder how anyone could prepare for events such as these within this book.

Great continuation of the story

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, just as long as they started with book 1. Starting from this point would be too confusing.

What about Andrew McFerrin’s performance did you like?

I liked everything about his performance. He's a great narrator. He does a great job with male and female voices, and changes just enough between characters to where you're not lost when the next person speaks.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No, I can't recall laughing any during this book. I also did not cry, although there are several cringe worthy moments.

Still going strong

Any additional comments?

There's a line in the book at the very beginning made by Steve that made me laugh out loud at the way the narrator - Andrew McFerrin- delivered it. It was done exactly how I'd expect the line to be delivered and it helped bring me back into Brown's world easily. It was "God knows, the bones wouldn't come out of the trench on their own.... *God, please. Don't let them come out of the trench by themselves."
You'll know when you hear it.
I've said it in a previous opinion of the book series, but if you've made it this far, you know that you'll enjoy the ride.
I will say that there do seem to be a lot of characters in the books that start kind of feeling like they have a lot of the same character traits of other major players- but I'm ok with heroism in books. And, not every character that I want to see lives, does- so there's a good balance of new people to deaths of characters who have been around a while, and most die in a tragic way, that's gutsy for a writer to do - considering fans have come this far.
The book takes place at the very beginning of Winter - and then during some big snow storms that have taken place. In most cases, there won't be SO much action taking place because all of the people would want to hunker down and avoid the weather, so I can at least say that the book does a good job of at least showing some of the horrible bickering that would go on if you were locked in one place with a group of people, but luckily does NOT go overboard with completely inane conversations that would happen to people for real. (The girls never get THAT over the top girly in annoyance).
The heroes have proven themselves and most often than not always put themselves first in harms way. While that could seem to have some drawbacks, I don't think it completely does. While I do wonder when Steve and Kevin might actually fall into sheer unconsciousness for days, I would believe that the type of character that we see- this hero type, would rise among the people who don't know what to do, or how to do things to stay alive. So, I'm fine with all that.
I did find the Vignettes a little more distracting this time, since there's now a group in Egypt , a military area, and a tourist attraction, and island - and while these snippets felt more interesting in the last book, since I've seen those characters (some) before- it felt a little more jarring this time, in that- a scene with Steve or Kevin might end on a cliffhanger and I wanted to know more- and had to wait. BUT - it's good to see the rounded sphere of the world going on around the main characters to date (even though in print I *might* have skipped some of the PoV's because I was too anxious for the main stories).
Overall, this installment to the series is a great addition and I enjoyed listening to it again. I look forward to the next book, one of which I didn't catch up on this first time it was in print.

You know if you're a fan of the series and the characters by this point. I can't tell you more than what you know from the past books- but this one definitely didn't let me down.

Enjoy!

Still going strong!

I am absolutely loving this series. I'm so happy there's a bunch of the books. The only thing I'd have to give critique on would be the narrator's "female" voice. It's kind of whiny and grating, but, that's not really important. I think this is a series I could listen to many times.

Could you prepare for zombies?

Would you listen to DEAD: Winter again? Why?

Of course I'd listen to Dead: Winter again. Why not? It's an awesome book.

What other book might you compare DEAD: Winter to and why?

Dead: Winter is part of the Dead series by TW Brown. It is well worth giving the whole series a try.

Have you listened to any of Andrew McFerrin’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Andrew McFerrin is a great narrator. His voices help keep the listener spell bound. I love the Egyptian accents that he uses. He is fast becoming one of my favorite narrators.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Probably not a book to listen to all in one setting. You'd lose some of the story if you tried grinding it all out at once. That would take away from the spooky bits and the whole zombie vibe. Well worth giving it the time and attention though.

Any additional comments?

I love the multiple levels of the characters in this book. Each story helps show the struggles people would face in this new world AZ (After Zombies.). Warning – There is violence, death, blood, and horror within this book. There is also life, love, and laughter.

Why Eqypt!?

What did you like best about DEAD: Winter? What did you like least?

I like the 2 running story lines, the vignettes - not so much. I sort of understand their usage - maybe you hit a brick wall with one of the main ones - kill off a main character - well then you can just flesh out a vignette. Voila - the story continues. But Egypt - don't really care.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Okay - you're just going to end there? Good way to ensure the purchase of book 5. (or is it 6)

Which scene was your favorite?

The little girls sledding in the snow.

Do you think DEAD: Winter needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

well of course it does!

Any additional comments?

Seriously - please get out of Egypt.

Still an awesome ZA series

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This is another great continuation of the zombie apocalypse story. The narrator continues to be FANTASTIC! The series continues to follow the groups from book 3. Definitely a series I will continue. It is just so darn entertaining, even in it's brutality.

Brown or King?

This writer has a sick imagination. Much like Stephen King, in my opinion. His descriptions of what the survivors are seeing and feeling are much too real and holds no punches. There are times, I feel almost sick due to my own active imagination. I must say to those reading this review, again in my opinion, this is NOT a bad thing! To be able to put onto paper one's thoughts is a talent beyond measure. Andrew McFerrin, as the narrator, continues to do this story justice with his ability to present those thoughts and feelings in his voice for the characters. The hurt, disgust, fear, and, yes, even joy, are all represented well by Andrew McFerrin. Moving on the next book!
