Story
Ellen was just trying to help a stranger. That was how it started: giving a few minutes respite to a flustered young mother sitting opposite her on the train. A few minutes holding her baby while the mother makes an urgent call. The weight of the child in her arms making Ellen's heart ache for what she can never have. Five minutes pass. Ten. The train pulls into a station and Ellen is stunned to see the mother hurrying away down the platform without looking back.

The inhabitants of the Inventor's Housing Estate keep themselves to themselves. There are the friendly 'Hellos' when commutes coincide and the odd cheeky eye roll when the wine bottles clank in number seven's wheelie bin, but it's not exactly Ramsay Street. The dilapidated community centre is no longer the beating heart of the estate that Becky remembers from her childhood. So the new pottery class she's helped set up feels like a fresh start. I thought I was sorted on the life front. I was a heart surgeon with a loving partner and two gorgeous little girls. Except my husband’s version of "loving" is lying, cheating, and sleeping his way around London. Which means I definitely deserve a refund. Unfortunately, moving on isn’t that simple. Just because I know how to operate on a heart doesn’t mean I know how to fix my broken one. Plus, I lost the receipt for him years ago, so I’m definitely getting shortchanged. But now that I’m single, am I ready to mingle?

Summary
Hilariously read by Sally Phillips, star of Smack the Pony, Bridget Jones's Diary and Miranda - Confessions of a Forty-Something F--k Up is a must-listen for anyone whose life isn’t working out quite how they’d planned.
Nell Stevens’ life is a mess.
When her business goes bust and her fiancé with it, Nell’s happy ever after in California falls apart and she moves back to London to start over. But a lot has changed since she’s been gone. All her single friends are now married with children, sky-high rents force her to rent a room in a stranger’s house and in a world of perfect Instagram lives, she feels like a f--k up. Even worse, a 40-something f--k up.
But when she lands a job writing obituaries, Nell meets the fabulous Cricket, an 80-something widow with challenges of her own, and they strike up an unlikely friendship. Together they begin to help each other heal their aching hearts, cope with the loss of the lives they had planned and push each other into new adventures and unexpected joys.
Because Nell is determined. Next year things are going to be very different. It’s time to turn her life around.
A book for anyone who’s ever worried life isn’t going to plan, Confessions of a Forty-Something F--k Up by Alexandra Potter will make you laugh, and it might even make you cry. But most importantly, it will remind you that you’re not alone, because we’re all in this together.
Time to fall in love with your life.

A must read for every woman
The most uplifting, joy-provoking book I’ve listened to after this incredibly difficult year. If you feel you’ve singlehandedly messed up your life- it makes you feel very much not alone.
The Narration by Sally Phillips is stunning- funny, sad and able to penetrate even the most depressed soul.

I had my doubts ... but it’s just well written 👍🏽
I’m a 40 something bloke from the U.K. stuck in lockdown in Afghanistan! I listen to a book a week but never really post. 5mins in I thought this is a chick flick I’ve wasted my money, I’m so glad I stuck with it. I now know about cricket and monty, Fiona and the rest of the crew. A well written yarn filled with smiles, and nodding agreement even a tear of two. Brilliant stuff. 😉

Just what I needed! Honest, funny and uplifting!
I happened upon this book and wasn’t sure if I was going to be my thing. I worried it would be a bit too close to home given I could relate to the author and her experiences more generally… but she drew my in, had me laughing, made me feel a lot less alone and was generally a great diversion at a time when I needed it! Highly recommend it to anyone who is questioning - well anything really - about their lives and choices.
