Summary

In 2012, in a Middle Eastern souk, CIA agent Miles Brookhaven was attacked. He was infiltrating rebel groups in the area and no one was certain if his cover had been blown or if the act was just an arbitrary attack.

Now, Liz Carlyle and her Counter Terrorism unit in MI5 have been charged with the task of watching the international under-the-counter arms trade and British Intelligence forces have become increasingly concerned that extremist Al-Qaeda jihadis are building their power base ready to launch another attack. As the pressure mounts, Liz and her team must intercept illegal weapons before they get into the wrong hands.

Critic reviews

"She bids to join the ranks of such secret-agent authors as Somerset Maugham, Graham Greene and John le Carré" ( Wall Street Journal)
"A wealth of persuasive detail, obviously drawn from first-hand experience" ( Marie Claire)
"For a pacy page-turner, she's a safe bet . . . Rimington is particularly strong in her accounts of procedure, unsurprisingly, given her past role as Head of MI5" ( Independent)
"Liz Carlyle remains one of the most interesting characters in the male-dominated world of the spy thriller" ( Daily Express)
"Rimington's best work demonstrates a flair for narrative, with a sense of authenticity and an insider's grasp on the pressing issues of the day" ( Washington Post)

Not her best

I used to enjoy a lot this serie, and read most of it in random order, and I found this one too similar to others in terms of storyline, rythm and interactions between the main characters. It is ok, but not much more than ok.
The narrator, who I think very suited to the serie, is struggling with the accents and some of the male voices sound too forced.

totally up to the Rimmington standard

the expertise and knowledge makes this as with others by Stella Rimmington a fast moving cannot put down tale. The fact that it must so mirror reality is a large part of the whole experience.

Imagine story well written, and will based

Really enjoyed this series of books. Storylines are fun without being overly complicated. The feeling that we are getting an insight into the real world of espionage and corruption adds to the fun. And just add to it. The narrator does a pretty good job.

Having read every book in series so far..

This story is part of a series, which follows a MI6 Agent named Liz Carlyle from her university days through to her meteoric rise through the halls of MI6 and several of her major field cases along the way.

No good book ignores the romantic angel and this book is no different. In fact this is perhaps one of the most emotionally charged books in the series on that front.

The story is well thought out and very detailed, ensuring great imagery for the reader, whilst also making sure that all elements are fully understNdable to readers of all ages and intellects.

Whilst the format is pretty common to all the books in the series, the stories are significantly intertwined and different as to make each book thoroughly enjoyable.

After being confined to a bed for almost 4 months, these books have kept me entertained and sane. I even changed my Subscription to the yearly plan so I could get more credits to obtain more books. Although I would have happily purchased this entire series of books.

Well worth a read, and even a re-read..😀

Another superb Liz Carlisle story.

A good slow developing story rubbing along across Europe and the Middle East. Petered out towards the finishing moments of the story but a good wash up at the end.

Narrator aghhhhh

Nice gentle spook story, but I'm afraid all but ruined by the narrator. She doesn't read well and her voices were so bad it was irritating and rather spoilt the book

Thin Plot, Dreadfull narration

Plot is barely a short story padded out with endless repetition, possibly for the benefit of readers who have fallen asleep. Narration is slow, monotonous and packed with silly accents. I will avoid both author and narrator in future.
