About this listen

Find the truth; risk everything. A gripping WWII spy novel full of intrigue and peril from a modern master.

1942: a German spy comes ashore on a desolate stretch of Lincolnshire beach. But he is hunted down by a young detective, Richard Prince. The secret services have need of a man like him....

In occupied Europe, Denmark is a hotbed of problems for British intelligence. Rumours of a war-ending weapon being developed by the Germans are rife. Sent to Copenhagen, Prince is soon caught in a deadly game of cat and mouse. Dodging Gestapo agents, SS muscle and the danger of betrayal, his survival - and the war effort - hangs in the balance.

Gripping and intense, Prince of Spies is the first in a new espionage series that will delight fans of Alan Furst, Philip Kerr and John le Carré.

The story is ok….not hugely thrilling and a little far-fetched, but I did feel compelled to finish it…the narration is pretty poor and lacking in variety and excitement. I don’t think I’ll be bothering with any more titles by this author…perhaps if it was narrated by Jonathan Keeble I might be thinking differently??

Dull narration

As usual Alex Gerlis has produced a compelling story, very well researched. I did find the narration rather lumpy and often unconvincing.

Great story

The narration leaves a bit to be desired. The narrator needs to learn how some names are pronounced - like Ciaus (as in the College). The correct pronunciation is "Keys". It took me several minutes to figure it out. There were a few other issues where a place name was wrong, but in general a very good offering.

Great story, but...

Like other reviewers, I felt compelled to listen to the end, even though narration is poor. It is so robotic, I even checked whether it was indeed a human and not AI. I have the sense that the narrator has chosen a slow enough speed at which to go that ensures he doesn’t need to pre-read. The outcome of which was as much emotion as a fish might show. That said, Prince himself is poorly written as well. Shan’t be continuing. Shame. I like some other Gerlis and had high hopes.

Good story, shame no emotion

A promising start to a new series of spy thrillers absolutely ruined by the worst narration in my extensive Audible library.

This narrator should return to traffic reports.
The story isn’t much better, so he’ll feel at home.

So badly read

love the complexity, twists and turns, the detailed descriptions, a little history, tiny bit of romance.

so much going on to keep you interested

Entertaining and compelling story. It's a bit far fetched in some ways but it's not a history book.

Quite good

The reader is superb and manages to convey the tension in the story which unfolds brilliantly
