Summary

When Jenny inherits her estranged grandmother’s cottage in Sherwood Forest, she has nothing to lose - no money, no job, no friends, no family to speak of, and zero self-respect. Things can only get better....

Her grumpy but decidedly handsome new neighbour, Mack, has a habit of bestowing unsolicited good deeds on her. And when Jenny is welcomed into a rather unusual book club, life seems to finally be getting more interesting.

Instead of reading, the members pledge to complete individual challenges before Christmas: from finding new love and learning to bake to completing a daredevil bucket list. Jenny can’t resist joining in, and soon a year of friendship and laughter, tears and regrets unfolds in the most unexpected ways.

Warm, wise, funny and utterly uplifting. What one thing would you change in your life before Christmas comes around?

I have never listened to anything like it before!

I thought that I hated this type of book, but it was free so I gave it a go. I am so glad that I did because it was just wonderful! I husband of many years was astonished to hear bits of the story without a murder or battle. I need to find more!

Wonderful! Delightful!Endearing and Enchanting.

Loved this story. Thought it would be a twee 'Christmas Movies 24 ' style story - where everyone smiles in Santaland ... ... ... Wow was I ever wrong! I became so wrapped up in this story that I made us late to a Christmas/Birthday party ... and it was my OH's birthday party! The main protagonist (see Me Abbott I did pay attention in English class) is both hero and villain / victim and attacker - and I loved her. Because at so many points in this story she was me. I had been in that awkward situation, blurted out words which could maim from any distance. And in turn had my heart shredded by some heartless beast. I chose an Audible book so I could crochet as I listened - an inconvenient and painful back injury still causing me to find distractions from the persistent pain - and this book did that ... That and more. I had to keep stopping the crochet to laugh out loud - then explain to my hubby why I was interrupting his Saturday Sport - giving him the backstory - at first. Followed by ... " now what has happened...? " and then he passed me the tissues as she read the journals ... and ... Without spoilers - characters seeking forgiveness - tears rolling down my cheeks. I would like to think it was the exceptionally good writing delivered by the amazingly talented Helen Keeley who managed to put much expression and feeling into the author's words (amazing Beth Moran) that I cried like a baby and laughed like a drain (which always confused me as drains glug) rather than the strong medication. Beth's intelligent humour was pitched perfectly. I like to work out the coming humour. I don't like slapstick - in your face humour which is explained in such detail that it tells you when and how to laugh. That's not for me. Beth left the humour to emerge in the reader's mind, to bloom and then showered the reader in golden laughter as they either predict "on no don't say she's is going to ...." Or allow the reader the intelligence of finishing the joke themselves. You know - like the saying - " There are two types of people in the world - those who can extrapolate from the information given and ... ". Well Beth, you and Helen have made a convert out of me - and he's - I was able to extrapolate. Thank you.

Absolutely Brilliant

I didn't quite know what to expect with this book when I started listening. However, as I carried on reading I was hooked.
I knew how it would end but the amount of twists & turns kept me addicted right to the very end.
There was laughter & tears but at the end I felt happiness. That is the sign of a good book.
I would definitely recommend it.
