Summary

History obsessed gamer Matt Bailey has always dreamed of commanding his own Roman Legion. Now he can. The newest VRMMORPG Gods & Kings is the closest thing to a time machine he’ll ever get.

With the powers of his Warrior Priest class, Matt must build his army, level his followers and discover new battle formations that will help him defeat his enemies and become a true Roman general.

More victories means more glory and more men - so Matt must use all his knowledge of history to give his fighters the edge in battle, as well as buffing his troops with ancient magic and even summoning mythic beasts to fight alongside his men. It’s awesome!

But his carefree attitude soon earns the scorn of a serious competitor who has made it his mission to rewrite history and see Matt and his allies destroyed. To see the version of Rome he loves come to life, Matt must use all his skill to defeat his nemesis and save the empire.

Loved it!

This book is a litrpg set in ancient Rome two things I like very much. Light on the litrpg and heavy on the Rome.

I will start with the things I like which are numerous. I like that the character just wants to be Emperor in the game and not trying to win some large amount of money to cure there mother of cancer or some such which is seemingly omnipresent in litrpgs. I liked the strategic battles although there is room for improvement. For example simplification of situations could be done better as they can be a bit confusing with various names for troops and where exactly the mc is on the battlefield being a bit fluid. I like that the character doesn't always have things go there way for example would be what happened in Alexandria. I could keep going but I don't want to...

Things I don't like the progression seems to not be worth a damn the abilities are cool but that's the only effect. Also the character doesn't really do much this is all right until after Alxandria where he has this long monologue of letting others dictate his actions and only following he promise to change and then basically goes right back to following his faction leader like a puppy.

But I did enjoy it very much and will be getting the next one

Great start!

Excellent first novel! Really enjoyed unpredictability of the quests and battles. Book is good for rpg fans and historical fiction fans alike.

A Riveting Blend of History and Fantasy

I recently had the pleasure of delving into Anthony's book and I am beyond impressed. As an avid fan of both litRPG and historical fiction, his book seamlessly weaves these genres together, creating a captivating narrative that kept me hooked from start to finish.

Anthony's writing style is nothing short of brilliant. The prose is eloquent and flows effortlessly, making it easy for listeners (and readers) to immerse themselves in the story. His attention to detail is remarkable, especially when it comes to the historical aspect. It's clear that he has done extensive research, bringing ancient Rome to life with vivid descriptions and an authentic atmosphere.

What sets this book apart, however, is the perfect blend of reality and fantasy. Anthony skillfully incorporates elements of the litRPG genre into the rich tapestry of ancient Rome, creating a unique and enthralling experience. The characters are well-developed, each with their own motivations and arcs, making them relatable and endearing.

The plot is a rollercoaster of excitement, with twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. And oh, the ending! It's one of the most satisfying conclusions I've encountered in a long time. Anthony masterfully ties up loose ends while leaving just enough mystery to leave listeners eagerly anticipating the next installment.

Whether you're a seasoned litRPG enthusiast or simply have an interest in ancient Rome, this book is a must-read. Anthony's storytelling prowess, coupled with his deep understanding of both genres, creates a literary experience that is both entertaining and intellectually stimulating.

I wholeheartedly recommend this audiobook to anyone seeking a thrilling journey through time and fantasy. Anthony has crafted a gem that transends genres. I can't wait for the next chapter in this mesmerizing adventure!
