Summary

A realm aside from our own. The center of the realities. Home to every spectrum of magic.

From the beautiful to the terrible, it was all held in delicate balance by the Eternal Emperor and his immortal children. For 10,000 years, the empire was the bastion that protected the sentient races from the darkness, but the revolution, and the War of the Gods has changed all that . . .

Jax seems like a regular guy, except that he fights creatures from a strange place called the UnderVerse in his sleep, leaving him covered in horrific scars when he wakes up. The mysterious disappearance of his brother five years prior has forced Jax into a holding pattern, with a job he tolerates, a girl he kinda, sorta loves . . . until he's kidnapped and given a stark choice by his asshat of a father: Go to the UnderVerse in reality, travel to the capitol of that ruined realm at the center of reality, and open a portal for the Noble Houses to return home . . .

Or die, slowly.

That's the good news. The bad is that he has to survive the arena first, to prove his right to go. Twelve will enter, only one can leave . . .

Fantastic.

I wasn’t sure to start but this is one of the best LITRPG stories I’ve read or listened to.

Great book, needs some adjustment

Tldr: good set of books, stick through it.

Before listening to a new series I read these reviews and judge the sentiment and for this, it was solidly mixed so I thought I would weigh in.
The series, of which I am 4 books in at this point is fantastic, the world is interesting, the plot itself is a mid to high tier one, not novel but definitely not overly cliché and the way the characters have been developed is genuinely good.
The issue people have with this book and what I had to begin with is the narration, it's a bit loud, it's played up and it is energetic. This takes some getting used to but ultimately it is just something that you need acclimating to, get over this and you will have a great time!

Great story - Accents questionable

Decided to start from the beginning of Jez’s catalogue after listening to age of stone, bronze and iron.

This has a great introduction and character build as in his other LITRPG novels.

Narration however…

While energetic and performance rich, the accents aren’t the best. It’s hard to discern where anyone comes from.

Australian or Dick Van Dykes London Cockney?

Romanian or Sean Connery’s light Scottish rogue?

I’ll let you decide, but the story is great if you can stomach the narration

Enjoyed the story, narration some times challengin

the story was enjoyable, sufficient progress to not feel stagnant but not so fast to feel artificial. the mc feels fairly genuine. motivation neither purely altruistic nor selfish. somewhat predictable but that might be more my fault.

the narration was not great. it felt like it was constantly trying to be dark, gritty and intense. the system was made to sound like a talk show host for no appropriate reason and the accent was a cross between a heavy australian and maybe jordie accent or something. Even having lived for 10 years there and married a British person at times I could not make out what was being said. that was also probably to the constant growly voice of the mc. good effort but perhaps won't appeal to a wider audience who may find it completely unintelligible.

Brilliant Story

An energetic narration brings colour to the characters, and a potty mouthed main character provides plenty of action. You may find the audible narration a bit strange if you are just used to monotonous US accents. Lots of Stats once Jaxx gets into the new world. This book got me back into reading print after listening , good value for money too at 20+ hrs .
Watch out for Python and Pratchett Easter eggs and some laugh out loud sarcasm .
