Summary

Sabrina Pace-Humphreys is a 43-year-old mother of four and grandmother of two, an award-winning businesswoman, an ultrarunner, a social justice activist and a recovering alcoholic. She is a mixed-raced woman, the daughter of a white Scottish Roman Catholic woman and a Black Church of England man. When she was two, her parents separated and Sabrina, her mother and her white-presenting younger sister moved to a small market town where no one looked like her. From as young as she can remember, she was the subject of verbal and physical racist abuse.

In Black Sheep, Sabrina reveals how she got from there to here: about growing up in a home, a school and a town where no-one looked like her and her subsequent struggle to understand and find her identity; about her lived experience of rural racism; about becoming a teenage mother and her determination to break that stereotype; about her battle with alcoholism and her mental health; about how running saved her life and ultimately about how someone can not only survive but thrive in spite of their past.

Sabrina's experience will chime with anyone who has felt like an outsider. Poignant and eye-opening, and exploring themes of trauma, identity, mental health and addiction, Black Sheep is a tale of triumph: of grit and determination, of hope over despair.

Absolutely Phenomenal

This is a compelling, and deeply honest account of Sabrina's lived experience. This honesty is clearly evident in the raw emotion in Sabrina's writing and performance of this audiobook.

As someone also of mixed race, with a sibling who does not look mixed race. I feel represented and validated.

Sabrina gives so much of herself in this book through enormous adversity, and personal battles, to give us an insight and in to her innermost thoughts and feelings.

This book certainly has it's highs and lows but I particularly enjoyed Sabrina's sense of humour and her Scottish accents!

Harrowing, then inspiring

From shaking with rage at rural racism to awe and inspiration at setting up Black Trail Runners. It was great to learn about Ramsey’s Round. I was so inspired that I’ve taken up running and I’m half way through C25K. Well done Sabrina!

Inspiring, heartfelt, eye opening

Sabrina's honesty and bravery with that honesty is something to be marvelled at. Her narration really relayed the book with the depth that it was written in. Super inspiring and opens up a lot of questions about the so-called status quo of rural areas in the UK

Read this book!

Wether you’re a runner or not this book will leave an impression on you. Sabrina’s telling of her own story comes straight from the heart. I couldn’t put it down. The practical advice for combatting rural racism and turning closet allyship into concrete actions is really inspiring and gives me hope that we can change things. Let’s not ignore this call to action.
