Three colony ships took the remnants of humanity into space when the aliens came. They became separated and, for colony ship two, there was a daily struggle to maintain supplies, including water, In foraging for provisions in their small craft The Strider, Bishop Jones, just seventeen, and his sister, Ann, and close friend, Steve, in their small craft The Strider, discover that they are not only targets of pirates but also of injustices of their own government. Linking with an irascible A.I.named Sammy, the teenagers fight back.

This book is an omnibus of three short stories and, presumably, the prelude to further instalments although the story is complete in itself. The basic premise is good, with some interesting fight sequences but is low on character development: ironically the most satisfying is the irascible A.I. But there is an overall superficiality to the entire story, including with the plot itself which failed to fully convince this reader: too little detail as s!lightly abrasive movement from one scenario to the next combined with a seeming obsession with viral attacks. The narrator, Mike Thomas, does a good job in holding it all together, with a pleasant voice, good intonation and pacing, and bringing in distinctive voicing s for the various protagonists. He certainly he!ps to breath life into the text.

I was fortunate in being freely gifted with a complimentary copy of Bishop's Gambit, at my request, by the rights holder via Audiobook Boom. Thank you. Despite not being fully involving, it was an enjoyable listen, a science fiction space opera more likely to appeal to young adults than old SF hands who prefer their science a little more detailed.
