Summary

"Why don’t you come sit on my lap, so you don’t have to crank your neck?"

I didn’t have bruises.

She never left him.

He didn’t actually rape me.

Maybe I wasn’t worth believing.

Maybe it wasn’t that bad.

What if emotional abuse is so hidden that its effects remain unchallenged for decades, masquerading as personal failings?

Believing Me is an emotionally gripping memoir that gives language to the hidden and ineffable nature of childhood trauma and how it can imprint on a person, resulting in fractured self-esteem, addictions, perfectionism, and a string of abusive relationships.

Ingrid Clayton had been in the pursuit of healing for a lifetime including becoming a clinical psychologist and trauma therapist, but she never fully understood what she was healing from. Growing up in a fog of gaslighting made her question her reality. It wasn’t until she sat next to Dr. Bessel van der Kolk (The Body Keeps the Score) as he shared a case study so similar to her life that a seed was planted. “Trauma” might be a word that was personal to her.

When her stepfather died, Ingrid felt a calling to write her story, and these were the truths reflected in her words. By recounting vivid childhood memories, she wrote her way through patterns of lies and denial that had infected her entire family. She came to face the feelings she had minimized for so long.

By reclaiming her story, Ingrid transcended the role of healer into someone becoming healed, showing us what real healing looks like in the process.

Up there with Maté and Der Kolk for me

The lived experience shines through, coupled with excellent theory and compassionate application. This is a gift to the CPTSD community in living beyond diagnosis, thriving and stepping into empowerment safely.

A great listen - interesting and validating

Such a good book - and a great insight on situations that present as pretty harrowing, yet the mind still wants to say “it wasn’t that bad”. Do not skip the final chapter or glossary at the end - you will find a wealth of information that is so helpful.

Amazingly validating for me, and very relatable

Loved the fact it was the author talking it was so nice listening to her voice.
This book was so validating for me as I have suffered emotional narcissistic abuse my whole life and then went on to carry it on in my pattern s that formed within my relationships. In my 40s now and healing my past and starting my life.
Thank you so much Ingrid

Honest, raw and so so powerful!

It feels like there aren’t many words articulate enough to describe this book. Ingrid certainly leaves every word on the page, both heartbreaking and validating. There is such a strength in these words - my cPTSD self felt seen, heard and believed too. It’s a must read in my opinion!

Powerful

A very powerful story, showing one of many possibilities of a traumatic childhood and its devastating affect it can have for life. Thankfully the author also shows how healing is possible in a realistic way.

This book is a lifeline for childhood trauma survivors

I’ve had to pause this book over and over to let it really sink in. That’s when you know you’re listening to / reading a really good book.

I can’t describe the validation that comes from hearing Ingrid talk about the horror of her childhood, the desolation of not being believed and the utter confusion that comes when we gaslight ourselves (did that really happen?)

YES! It really happened!

As a fellow survivor who also has C-PTSD - I now have a new tool to help me as a trudge the road of recovery. This book is hope and healing and validation.

Thank you

Understanding Complex PTSD. An accessible read for all. Personal and brave. Read please UK psychiatrists and therapists.

I loved the writers voice and timing of the book.( as in rythem ) I listened and was hooked by her story. A valuable and honest account of growing up with alocholism and abuse.
The author succeeds in spreading the new understanding of the effects of persistant childhood trauma and it's effect on the nervous system. It's an accessible and is a beautiful account of her life and her learning, with a happy ending.
I'm kind of envious of her achievements but inspired greatly.
For those of us who can relate. We have a normal response to trauma. We don't have to beat ourselves up or excuse people treating us badly.
We can become aware of 'Gaslighting ourselves '.
And learn to speak our truth.
CPTSD isn't a thing yet in the UK NHS mental health field. Catch up Britain, please. Perhaps this book might help.
A must read for all, whoever you are. Excellent.
