Hmmm!
Note to self, you are supposed to be trying to stop listening, don’t listen to the whole book just because you’ve started and that goes for whole series too! And there’s an issue in this book which may continue into the next (the final book! Again(!),note to self, refer to first sentence!) but for those who only read this or stop at this book, rape is rape, even if you’ve previously, willingly sleep with someone before! I felt that issue left hanging was very alarming even in a fictional story.

A mixed bag
This would be a 5-star book if it was just down to the narrator (excellent) and the storylines relating to police work and solving murders. Those plot lines are well written and gripping, so the reader is constantly wondering what will happen next. HOWEVER, the gratuitous, graphic sex scenes and the endless, highly unbelievable and just plain unnecessary drama around Detective McGuire’s love life bring the whole experience down for me. You can really tell that this is a male author writing the way he *thinks* a female character would think and behave, as it just comes off like a sexist trope. If you can ignore the extraneous bits, it’s a great story!

Superb narration
A great story, with baddies so wicked that you relish their downfall, even as you try not to be vengeful! Aoife MacMahon is a very skilled narrator who brings all the different characters to life brilliantly, especially the spirited Katie Magiire. This is an almost invisible and underappreciated skill, because you only realise what a challenge it is when you’ve heard narration that doesn’t hit the mark as well as this does. I have listened to the Katie Maguire series in the wrong order, which meant that I could anticipate some events, but this didn’t ruin my enjoyment and they all work as stand alone novels anyway.

After 2 chapters I gave on on this series.
I cant listen anymore. I should of given up a few books ago, as the dog fighting and dog cruelty storyline is too graphic and sickening for me.
The sex scenes and lesbian scenes are SO totally unbelievable...you can tell it's written by a man. His sex scenes are samey all throughout the series '...rolling her nipple between his thumb and fingers...' blah blah blah.
The only positive is the narrator who has a lovely voice
