Summary

Winner, CWA Gold Dagger, 2022

A Good Housekeeping Book of the Year.

This is not just another novel about a dead girl.

When she arrived in New York on her 18th birthday carrying nothing but $600 cash and a stolen camera, Alice was looking for a fresh start. Now, just one month later, she is the city's latest Jane Doe, an unidentified murder victim.

Ruby Jones is also trying to start over; she travelled halfway around the world only to find herself lonelier than ever. Until she finds Alice Lee's body by the Hudson River.

From this devastating first encounter, the two women form an unbreakable bond. Alice is sure that Ruby is the key to solving the mystery of her life—and death. And Ruby—struggling to forget what she saw that morning—finds herself unable to let Alice go. Not until she is given the ending she deserves.

Before You Knew My Name doesn't ask whodunnit. Instead, this powerful, hopeful novel asks: who was she? And what did she leave behind? The answers might surprise you.

Critic reviews

"The most wonderful book. Unusual, beautiful, feminist, gripping, deserves to win prizes. I loved it so much." (Marian Keyes)

Interesting and original story

A refreshingly different way of presenting a story from the young victim's perspective. She tells her back story as the plot progresses with the story of another girl who arrived in New York on the same day, and who unexpectedly discovers the body.

interesting but very drawn out

Very interesting concept but overly dull with 2 dimensional characters. There were many good ideas but every aspect was laboured

Must-read

Heartbreaking, yet somehow uplifting. Powerful, beautiful, tragic, and thought-provoking. I can’t wait for more from Jacqueline Bublitz.

It felt to my heart. Like some one talk to my soul

I bought a physical book of this from a book shop and I wondered when I see that "audiobook available at ..." and when I listen to the sample... It feels so much... So I bought it... Sometimes I couldn't stop listening and I listen to it days and nights. and finished it within 3 days. I was that curious to read that. That book is awesome...
