Summary

I am Axios of Sparta, and I was born to kill. At age seven, I left home to train with other boys where we were taught obedience, solidarity, military strategy, and how to withstand pain. My harsh upbringing stripped me of my weaknesses and forced me to become strong. Ruthless.

But, I craved something greater - a life I could never have.

Against all odds, and the toughest training a warrior could endure, I found an unexpected love in the arms of a fellow Spartan. He was the very air I breathed and the water that sustained me. Fighting side by side with him, we were invincible. Where he went, I followed.

However, there was no place for love in Sparta. Feelings were for the weak. The only life for a Spartan was one of battle and brutality with no guarantee of tomorrow. In times of war, all men were put to the test, but the greatest challenge for us was not one of swords and spears, but of the heart.

Lost for words...

I'm completely blown away by this book. The story is brutal but beautiful. The main characters have such a strong connection to each other, they possess passion and love more than any other character I have ever read. The heart break in this story takes your breath away. I can go years without crying but I couldn't stop the tears falling by the end.

The narrator is brilliant. Absolutely stunning delivery of the story. I could listen to him all day.

I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars.

Epic!

This is a breathtaking and intensely emotional epic saga detailing the lives and love of two Spartans Axios and Eryx. It spans their lives from when they meet as young boys, training to become soldiers, through various campaigns in adulthood. Their friendship grows and they fall deeply in love.
The amount of detail and research that the author has put into this book is astounding. It is also beautifully written. The development of the characters of Ax and Ery throughout the story from boys to men, friends to lovers is flawless and the supporting cast were very strong and contributed immensely to this epic saga.
The battle scenes were particularly realistic, not that I have been in one, but I felt my pulse quicken and my anxiety for the characters was real and many tears were shed.
I have to thank the author for the epilogue as after all the emotion a time of calm was needed before the end.
The narrator, Adam Stubbs, is new to me and he was perfect for this book.

So poor I couldn't even finish it - the lust was utterly tedious!!!

Brilliant story

I loved this book, brutal in places, but a great story, especially the love between the two main MCs.

Spectacular and so unique!

Story: A life journey of a Spartan warrior, from training, through love, pain, chapters of happiness and war. I loved how emotional the story was. Told from single POV, it gives great insight into Axios' emotions and personal development throughout all the events. It was an amazing thing to see his love with Eryx as the constant companion and support in all of the story.
It's definitely not a sweet and fluffy love story. It's visceral, brutal and genuine. But I enjoyed it immensely.
Narration: Perfect performance. Great voice and strong enough to carry the characters' personalities.
