About this listen

Down-on-her-luck Lori learns she's about to inherit a sizable estate - if she can discover the secret hidden in a treasure trove of letters in Dimity's English country cottage. What begins as a fairy tale becomes a mystery - and a ghost story - in an improbably cozy setting, as Aunt Dimity's indominable spirit leads Lori on an otherworldly quest to discover how, in this life, true love can conquer all.

Pretty terrible accents and boring to boot

The attempts at some British accents are quite off-putting. I was hoping the storyline would overcome that for me. Sadly it did not.

Poor narration

Would you consider the audio edition of Aunt Dimity's Death to be better than the print version?

No. Sounds robotic and monotone. The story might be OK but the narration is too irritating. Shame the series all use the same narrator. Might consider reading a copy of the book myself

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Teri Clark Linden?

An alternative narrator might improve the performance.

Great story, dreadful narration

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The narration - have it done by someone who can do a believable English and Scottish accent, and who knows the difference between a rural English accent an an awful Irish accent.

What did you like best about this story?

The characters and the plot.

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Teri Clark Linden?

Anyone less less stilted , with a better grasp of English (as opposed to American) pronunciation

Did Aunt Dimity's Death inspire you to do anything?

The story inspired me to buy the next one, despite it having the same awful narrator.

Narrator sounds bored so its not a great start!

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I think the story was ok but the narrator was so monotone that even interesting parts sounded boring. A different narrator may have brought some expression to the reading.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Most interesting was the idea that Aunt Dimity doesn't exist and then a young woman gets a call from a lawyer claiming to be representing Aunt Dimity - sounds intriguing.
It is quite slow going though.

How could the performance have been better?

More expression from the narrator

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

disappointment - I was hoping to like this as there are several in the series and I like to listen to a whole series.

Poor Narration

The story, whilst not great literature, was a cozy read which kept my interest. It was not helped at all by the narration which sounded-computer generated with really bad attempts at accents.

Lovely story completed ruined by the narration

Would you try another book written by Nancy Atherton or narrated by Teri Clark Linden?

I would read Nancy Atherton's books again, but not listen, as I find myself shouting at the narrator and that really ruins the effect!

What did you like best about this story?

I am only halfway through so far, but am intrigued by the storyline and refreshing characters.

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Teri Clark Linden?

Anyone who could speak English properly, in either an American accent or British! All the letter As being pronounced as "ay" drove me potty, especially at the beginning of words, together with each syllable being enunciated as if it were a separate word! I can't believe anyone would normally speak that way!

If this book were a film would you go see it?

Yes.

Any additional comments?

Only that the narrators are so important to a listener's enjoyment of a story, especially when some of us listen to hundreds of them. Writers, please choose more carefully for your stories and narrators, do your language research better - please!

Different

Where does Aunt Dimity's Death rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Enjoyed this, the first book in the series. Concept and story different. Likable characters. Narration very good. Enjoyed the book and the audiobook enough to buy the rest of the books and available audiobooks in the series.

What other book might you compare Aunt Dimity's Death to, and why?

I could compare this series with the Mrs. Pollifax series and the books by Georgette Heyer who writes mysteries as well as romances. These books tell stories without horror, or adult sex scenes, or "psycho" problems of characters. Excentrics and murders are present but not to the point of acute discomfort.

Have you listened to any of Teri Clark Linden’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I have not listened to any other performances of Teri Clark Linden but will look out for them. I like her voice (or voices)

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Unfortunately yes , as I do need my sleep. Fortunately audible has a chapter stop or I would be up all night.

Any additional comments?

I suppose this is like a fairy tale book where the heroine lives happily ever after as well as a happy ending for the title character.

lousy Scottish accent but if you can ignore that it is quite enjoyable. plot is a little contrived but a nice void filler, not too taxing on the brain.

Great Cozy Read

Loved the book, will read all of them. Narration is really very bad, no feeling to it and very wooden. The whole series should be recorded again with a different narrator.
