Summary

"She's just watching, thinking about it again, when a big flash car pulls up outside. No one gets out. Then the doors of the bar open and people appear. Two men and a youngish woman, and one of the men has a hold on the woman's arm. It looks as if they're having words. Then this all happens quickly—they push the woman towards the car, one of the back doors opens, and they manhandle her inside. Sarah hears a muffled shout from the woman and the car pulls away. It's all over in a few seconds." Just a few seconds—but seconds which will set in motion a sequence of events involving every member of the Kings Lake Central murder squad in the days to follow. This time the threat is to one of their own.

Simply brilliant

Another brilliant Peter Grainger story which was both well written and well narrated. Such a gripping plot that I listened to it far too quickly as I couldn’t switch off!

brilliant as ever

I'm biased i'll admit it. give me any Peter grainger book and I'm over the moon. great writing - good story - and to top it off the fabulous voice of Gildart Jackson and I have the perfect audio book. Of course the D C Smith series is by far the best but i've listened to that series 4 times now so happy to make do with Peters other series and just pray he writes more for DC.
this book involves the drug trade and grow factories, illegal immigration and abuse of migrants but it is the relationships and interaction of characters in the books that keeps me hooked. Sit back and enjoy....I always do and they just don't last long enough.

Another great one - sorry it’s finished!

I have read all the series in order and none have disappointed. While the characters, thankfully, remain the same the stories are all different. There is never a superfluous sentence or unreal dialogue. Reading in order, starting with the DC Smith books, is the best way of listening to these as the characters lives are as important as the stories.

The narrator is, as ever, excellent and among my three favourite narrators ever, the others are Michael Jayston and Sean Barrett, so in good company.

one of the best series

Excellent allaround. The readers made the characters individual. Good stories, but listening to both DC series in order really helps. Lived them so much I bought the rest. Wondering whatll happen next!

peter Grainger: best contemporary crime writer

he writes so well, builds such real and likeable characters, and walks the line between building tension without straying into gratuitous violence. I feel a loss whenever I finish one of his books.

just get better than ever waiting for the next book in the series.

love the team of characters and how each bring a superb slant on each story. Narration is excellent and not too much rehashing of previous cases. The pace and connections between books is appropriate and the definition of procedures in policing, forensics , law and society should make us all stop and think!

Heart thumping, Heart breaking!

Anything dealing with kids in crime or in danger, always tears at my heart but ti's story was brilliantly handled, as always. A slightly less 'confortable' telling of unusual criminal activity in Norfolk and as always, totally believeable. I love Peter Grainger's characters because I know them. They are living breathing people that do a brilliant job and don't ask for praise or thanks. This story could have come from crime annuls in the police records but are none the less modern and scarily real. Brilliant as ever! Please Peter, and Gildart( whose narration is unsurpassed!) don't stop doing what you do so well!! Thank you.

Another superb story

The humanity of the characters, the realism of the story all makes this a great listen. Make sure you go though the books in order as there are many references to previous investigations. Well worth reading/listening.
