About this listen

The eighth book in the bestselling Chronicles of St Mary's series which follows a group of tea-soaked disaster magnets as they hurtle their way around History. If you love Jasper Fforde or Ben Aaronovitch, you won't be able to resist Jodi Taylor.

Because, my dear Max, you dance on the edge of darkness ... and I don't think it would take very much for you to dance my way.

When an old enemy appears out of nowhere with an astonishing proposition for Max - a proposition that could change everything Max is tempted. Very tempted.

With an end to an old conflict finally in sight, it looks as if St Mary's problems are over with. Can they all now live happily ever after?

As everything hangs in the balance, Max and St Mary's find themselves engulfed in tragedies worse than they could ever imagine.

Is this the end?

Critic reviews

"A carnival ride through laughter and tears with a bit of time travel thrown in for spice...readers will be impatient for later instalments." ( Publishers Weekly)
"Taylor has written a madcap and very funny hodgepodge of a novel whose pacing and humour is reminiscent of a Simon Pegg-Edgar Wright film." ( Booklist)

excellent

As usual another triumph from Jodie Taylor.
I have to admit this book made me cry.
But I couldn't stop listening until the end.

Struggled to finish

This is the first St Mary's story that I have struggled to finish and, unfortunately, that is down to the story rather than Zara Ramm's excellent as always performance.

I really felt like the plot has started stagnating, the characters have plateaued and there is only so many times tat they can get into the same situations before it becomes stale.

There is so much potential for expansion still in this series but I really feel that the focus should start to move away from Max or bring in some of the other supporting characters more centrally (Markham's stand alone short is a good example of this)

Heading

liked it but did dwell on the brutality of war a bit for me
Glad of the 30 second jump button.

Carnage

High body count in this one. How come Clive Roland and time police can disregard history without getting squished but historians can't. Read this book before the short story A Christmas Present as that contains spoilers (as another time traveller might say). Still enjoying this series, long may it continue. Hope we see the giant teapot again.

Yay! Eilmer of Malmesbury, the flying monk, gets a mention. I'd been hoping Max and Markham my have paid him a visit one day, or at least the re-enactments they used to do.

Another amazing story

As usual, beautifully and intelligently written, clever, funny and heart wrenching. They just get better and better.

Easily The Best So Far

I’m in agreement with most of the reviewers - if this is your first look at St Mary’s, don’t start here! Go to the very beginning 0.5

However, if you, like me, couldn’t really get into the History element of this series but as a Sci-Fi fan, enjoy the ‘Time Travel’ element, so ducked out and started reading The Time Police series before they were introduced to St Mary’s, this episode is not as distressing as it is to regular St Mary’s aficionados.

It is sad, in parts, potentially harrowing too (but scenes of war will do that)! But it’s also surprising and endearing, heartwarming and humorous!

If you’re contemplating on whether to give up or keep going - keep going! At least just for this one. You won’t be disappointed.

Fantastic

i discovered St Marys six weeks ago. I have listened to all eight novels back to back and I am about to start the short stories. Such a refreshing change to have stories with adventure, history, romance, side splitting comedy and heart wrenching tragedy all in one. The only down side is the wait for the next novel.

Another great story of St Mary's

Jodi Foster's stories of St Mary's never fail to disappoint. Humour amongst danger, tragedy and excitement. Excellent characters, as always, and a sprinkling of new ones.
Part of the brilliance of this series is the narrator, Zara Ramm. Without her the story would not be the same.
