Summary

When Alexandra Richards approaches professional declutterer Ellen Curtis to ask her to help sort out her mother's chaotic flat, Ellen gets the impression Alexandra doesn't like her mother very much.

But when Ingrid Richards' body is discovered in her burned-out home, Alexandra's exasperated words don't seem such a joke. Due to the hazardous state of the victim's over-cluttered residence, the police are inclined to dismiss her death as an unfortunate accident. Ellen's not so sure.

Could Alexandra's resentment towards her mother have escalated into violence? The more she discovers about the dead woman's remarkable past, the more convinced Ellen becomes that there's something decidedly suspicious about her death.

Really enjoyed this book

I have read books or listened to nearly all Simon Brett’s books. You can’t beat them , great characters and good plots. I especially like this new series , and the characters. I know it is very gentle detective fiction and utter escapism but sometimes you want that . Like cocoa and slippers .

Love Simon Brett but this book really is exceptional. The insights into mental health and family relationships are so insightful. Excellent plot line too

Delightfully Brett

I love both Simon Brett’s writing and his voice. I’ve listened for years to his Radio 4 series and commented recently that every one bears up to multiple listens. I never tire of After Henry and No Commitments.
This story doesn’t disappoint- well rounded characters, a great story and one I’ll go back and listen again to
Thank you Mr Brett for giving me such a lot of enjoyment from your writings

Decluttering detective?

I am an avid fan of most of Simon Brett stories and have full collections of Charles Paris and The Feathering books. I’ve not developed a taste for Blotto and Twinks collection though and I’m afraid despite reading both the Declutter stories I’m not warming to them. I feel there needs to be further development of the characters. I’ve not got the warmth from or sympathy to them as I have with Carol and Jude or Charles. Not yet anyway. As ever, Simon Brett gives a wonderful reading though. Just love his voice.

As good as, if not better than Richard Osman

Don't get me wrong, I like Osman (very similar writing style) but Brett should be a million seller. This series is amazing.

I have often wondered if Brett is actually a ghost writer for Osman!!!
