Summary

“It was meant to be play acting,” said Whittaker. “But when someone is shot dead, on the stage in front of an audience, then it becomes an act of murder.”

Good.

The narration style was quite odd in my opinion, though I'm sure that the problem is mine and not the narrator's. I guess I just can't bond with some voices and this one I found very stilted. That aside, the story was believable and I quite enjoyed the characters.

An act of murder

Following on the heels of Jack Daniels and Kendall we now have another great detective from John Holt, Chief Inspector Whittaker. This is a fast paced and addictive story that kept me listening from start to finish. The characters are well defined and interesting. The story is good throughout without too much padding. There are twists and turns that keep you guessing until the final truth is revealed. Ben Werling does an excellent job of the narration, I was a little sceptical about an American narrator for this very English novel but it works superbly.
I was kindly given this audio book by the author and leave this honest and voluntary review.

"It was meant to be acting, nothing more."

When one of the actors in the provincial p!ay, Murder at Lockhall Manor is shot dead on stage in the second act, the indomitable Chief Inspector Whitaker of New Scotland Yard is sent out of London to investigate. Convinced that Tim, the young man who actually fired the shot could not be guilty, the whole cast and back room members of the amateur theatrical society come under scrutiny.
A who-dun-it? which is a far from heavy investigation, the detectives jocular, often breaking for tea and cake, or alcoholic support and bewailing the state of the weather, but still determined to solve the crime as the reader is party to all of the interviews held with possible suspects.
The narrattor, Ben Werling, has the perfect voice to perform the text, a warm and mid timbre English accented speaking range, well modulated and paced, with appropriately differentiated responses from each protagonist. A good performance with only a very rare editing glitch.
My thanks to the rights holder who, at my request, freely gifted me with a complimentary copy: it was a most enjoyable, easy listen and recommended.

This was amazing - so well written and narrated

This was such an English story and the narration really suited it. It was very midsummer murders. I really got into the story and it worked for me. I had to keep listening to find out what was going to happen next and there was even a little twist to keep the interest going.

Really enjoyed.

I was given a free copy by the author but the review is entirely my own.
