Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
Late summer, 1963.
Fresh from London and a recent cookery course, Alexandra has always loved a challenge.
Which is why she now finds herself standing outside an imposing chateau in Provence.
Waiting for her inside is three silent, rather hostile children who are to be her charges for the next month.
They will soon be more friendly, she tells herself. All they need is some fun, good food and an English education.
Far more of a challenge though is their father—an impossibly good-looking French count with whom she is rapidly falling in love....
Critic reviews
"The queen of uplifting, feel good romance." (AJ Pearce)
"Effortlessly lovable, warm and fun." (Closer)
"Top-drawer romantic escapism." (Daily Mail)

Delightfully Decadent
As usual a great read. A quaint tale that draws you in and forces you to carry on to the happy ending.

The second of a trio - doesn’t disappoint
Love a good Katie FForde. Wish she would write quicker but then they wouldn’t have the quality! I look forward to the next book in the series. This book follows Alexandra and it great. Well read too. Another great read - thanks Katie

For the right audience this is thoroughly charming
However, I’m not that audience. Classed as clean romance, I found it to be completely pedestrian in its minute real time descriptions of what the dog did, what the cat did, what child 1 did, what child 2 did, what child 3 did, what the snotty ex wife said… There was no angst of any kind whatsoever toward the inevitable Happy End. It was rather insipid and boring. The narrator, while excellent, was sweet and chirpy. For readers and listeners to clean romance its subtlety might have been enough, but I failed to detect the attraction that was meant to be developing. It was a damp squib. Too rational. Not enough emotion. Antoine was the opposite of what one is led to expect from the stereotypical Frenchman in romance. And everything was repeated several times … said Antoine…… said Alexandra…. said Lucinda…. said Felicité…… See Jane run. See Dick run.
The characters were well painted, if not very deep, the countryside and the age were nicely described. It was “nice”. Nothing to offend or upset, which will be a desirable quality in reading to escape from the world’s ugliness.

That French accent!
Story is pleasant enough and the narrator does it quite nicely EXCEPT that, for a character who is supposed to speak good colloquial French, her accent is appalling. On-ree (Henri), Ann-twahn (Antoine), sha-TOE etc etc.
Perhaps Audible couldn’t find a reader with a good French accent, but surely someone could have given the poor woman some coaching on pronunciation.

Fairytale
It’s written well but the story is a bit unbelievable unlike those early books that were more true to life.

A romantic idyll
I love the way the characters in this book were developed. The writer has a lovely way of describing the scenes that it transports the reader to the place where everything is happening. It’s an easy read and very suitable for downtime. The relationships in the book are heartwarming, and of course there is the odd Villain as you would expect in a pantomime. I love the pace of the book. I’ll recommend this to people who love romantic novels with beautiful scenes and culinary delights.

Boring….zzz
This is one of my least favourite books. The story is dull and boring. I used it to help me fall asleep at night otherwise I would have returned it.

Fair
Didn't realise it was set so many years ago so quite old fashioned. A little slow and long winded. Not Katie Ffordes best. I normally love her books

Enchanting
Lovely story written without the need to add too much drama or modern relationship dramas. Much appreciated. Lovely way to take one’s mind off
