Not the cradle fix I was hoping for.

Sadly this was not the cradle fix I was hoping for. Have to wait for book ten of will wrights epic series to come out soon. This story is only so, so most of the time with a couple of fun chapters only. Compared to cradle, the cast of side characters are no where near as memorable. There is no Yerin, no Gesha, no Ethan Aurelius, no North Strider, no Akura malice etc. The cast of characters in 1000 Li lack any depth compared to the truly epic cast of heroes and villains that shine through the 9 current books of the cradle series. While the narrator dose a great job, it’s the story and 2 dimensional characters that let down 1000 li. I will not be buying any more books in this series, sorry.

Amazing

This book is better than the first and the character grows at a relatively normal pace (which is great). I'm used to reading how the MC becomes the best after several years of training compared to the decades that others have trained. Tao wong doesn't make his characters over powered he makes him normal which makes him more relatable. love the book cant wait for book 3

Not as good as the first.

The first book was an underdog story. He rose from poor farmer to sect member, to inner sect member. He was harshly discriminated against for being poor, kicked down at every chance, and barely gained any respect. He was able to change expectations, and clawed his way up through hard work and determination. This book however, is mundane...

He learns a few styles, dabbles in smithing, pill-making, fighting, but never really does anything amazing or unordinary. Several times throughout the book he is told he has no talent for each subject, he is just average. AND he accepts that! He doesn't find a unique style to throw himself into. His professions yield little fruit. It is so frustrating.

Why is he suddenly so ordinary? Why does he not have any true passion? Why does he progress so slowly? My biggest concern are the time jumps. There are several, skipping days, weeks, and months. For all the time that is passing, little is actually happening. I am disappointed. The first book was more more well done. This one is just "eh".

The narrator is decent, being able to portray different male and female voices. Range doesn't go high or low though. It is also very difficult to tell the characters apart when they have such similar voices. Not to mention I still have trouble with the traditional Chinese names. Being a single language speaker, it is difficult for me to latch onto names I can't easily recognize. You may see this as petty or my fault for not being cultured enough, but it is a real concern that should be taken into account when selling to a specific audience.

Overall: I am not too pleased with how this book turned out. If I have to wait 6 hours for anything remotely substantial to occur then something is wrong. This book was still mildly enjoyable but the first book did it much better.. The narrator did a decent job. Characters and plot may be hard to follow if you are unfamiliar with Chinese culture.

Wish the book was longer.

I love this series so far and my only regret is that I wish the book was longer. It's like the Cradle series where the books are around eight hours long. By the time you are really into it the book is a quarter or half over. I end up finishing them in two to three days LOL. Then I have to wait six months for the next Uh. Hope the next Thousand Lee or System Apocalypses comes out soon.

Good cultivation novel.

It is slow, no super power ups or skipping ranks. It's a slow grind that 99.9% of cultivation novel's skip. Our Mc is a minor character in the grand scheme of things and that's what makes it so good, he doesn't have all the answers does solve all the problems or anything like that. I liked it personally.

Travis Baldree did a amazing job as always he's how I've found 3 books so far after his narration of cradle.

Perfect scores all around.

What are you waiting for buy this book :-)

This is in my top 5 series of books. Audible is suggesting my total at 667 currently!! Only thing I wish is the books were a little bit longer. I you love cultivation books this series is for you. Will Wight cradle series, Michael Chatfied's Ten realms series come to mind as comparable. However I have re listened to this series more than both. Travis Baldree's narration is a six star. Looking forward to next book.

life of a commoner with a little talent

This just felt like it had no point. Not sure what's up with the reviews but something no right. Likely paid to get good reviews or gave away a free copy for review. Basically no really building of the MC he is mediocre and subpar at every level. He stops being a black smith because he is subpar but keeps training to being an expansive pill refiner because of a crush. The only personal development was he thought at one point his arrogance against nobility may be misplaced. The story just seems misplaced, more like the life of a commoner with a little talent. This was NOT EPIC, just boring!

Book felt like a filler episode

The story was slow except for the last hour. nothing important or significant happened in the main character’s development he didn’t really grow Physically or mentally. Most likely won’t continue this series if character development is this slow.

No conflict

No real conflict. The mc only trained and fought random beasts. The story was good but to long for what it was.. filler. I got bored though out and had to come back it to finish it. 😐

Buy it. NOW. Even if its too short.

Tao Wong is just so goog at what he does, and this series is refreshing and fun. I hope he is Hard at work on the next one.
AUDIBLE could be better at posting etas.

Though I liked it, I must object to the length. It is just too short, even it is is the usual TW lenght.
