About this listen
'Fascinating, funny and heart wrenching' Dame Julie Walters
'An emotional rollercoaster - profoundly moving and wonderfully entertaining. A brilliant memoir about living, loving and losing' Bernardine Evaristo
‘One of the bravest, strongest, funniest memoirs I’ve ever read’ Bonnie Garmus, bestselling author of Lessons in Chemistry
An intimate and uplifting memoir by Richard E. Grant.
Born in Swaziland in 1957, Richard E. Grant moved to the UK to pursue his acting career, and has been a fixture on our screens since his breakout role in Withnail and I in 1987. When his beloved wife Joan died in 2021 after almost forty years together, she set him a challenge: to find a pocketful of happiness in every day.
The result is this book.
Set between the present day and flashbacks to delightfully indiscreet diary entries recalling landmarks from his remarkable life and glittering career, this is an immensely personal and profound memoir that celebrates and cherishes life’s unexpected joys.
Funny, moving and perceptive, A Pocketful of Happiness is an insight into the life of a much loved British actor.

Outstanding
I'm easily distracted when it comes to audio books, barely able to get through 10 minutes before my mind drifts elsewhere...not this time. Downloaded on Thursday, finished on Friday. Originally heard about this book on Off Menu podcast where REG was the guest diner.
Brutally honest, yet funny in equal measure. REG's voice also helps to keep you fixed on this story that's filled with hilarious Streisand annecdotes and heartbreaking moments.

Sad but enchanting
I was captivated by this - the audible version is Richard E Grant reading his own story and that adds an extra charm. An account of his love story with Joan and the last months of her life, which is both heart breaking and life affirming.

Best actor’s memoir ever
Richard narrated his own story so brilliantly that I felt I knew the characters. He is clearly hugely intelligent, quirky and funny. The death of his wife is told with piercing honesty and it is clear they adored each other and their daughter.
This is a study of grief too; for this it is beautifully observed.
The acting anecdotes are entertaining snd funny. The only problem is that if I should ever be fortunate enough to meet REG, I will be at risk of rushing over, thinking we know one another.

Gorgeous
Such a lovely book. Despite the sad subject matter, this is a joyous read, and Richard E Grant reads it beautifully.

A beautiful love story
Richards narration of his book of his 38 year love affair is incredibly moving, funny & so sad. One can feel his pleasure of his life with Joan, and then the devastating period of their life together during her illness.
His values and moral compass are a rarity in these times, yet cherished by those that know. Thank you for being so incredibly brave to produce this

Heartwarming and heartbreaking
Brave and honest account of his wife’s illness and eventual passing away with intermittent stories of the Hollywood scene. Written with so much love, evident not only in the writing but also in the narration.
A beautiful tribute to their life together.
