Summary

Amory Ames is alone at her country house Thornecrest, enjoying her last few weeks of peace and quiet as she prepares for the imminent arrival of her baby.

Her husband, Milo, is in London on business, and Amory is content to catch up on her correspondence, organise the nursery, and avoid the well-meaning but rather overbearing company of the ladies in the village as they prepare for the Springtide Festival.

But then a woman appears on her doorstep, also claiming to be Mrs. Ames, Milo’s wife. Amory's marriage has had its ups and downs in the past, but her faith in her husband has been restored, and Milo has been nothing but thrilled about becoming a father.

Though the supposed second Mrs. Ames seems earnest, Amory is convinced she must be mistaken, a belief that Milo confirms upon his homecoming. However, when a second unexpected visitor arrives at Thornecrest, secret identities and whirlwind romances appear to be becoming par for the course.

It's not until the day of the festival, when a body is discovered, that the strange characters appearing in town begin to seem more sinister, and Amory is determined to uncover the killer in the crowd.

A great listen! Darn good yarn!

The writing, the story & the performance were just wonderful. Great characters and outstanding performance which allowed for me as a listener to really connect and have feelings about them all - and impossible not to love Amory and Milo and really believe in their complicated but charming partnership.

Very Enjoyable

This was my favourite Amory and Milo mystery . Fabulous country village setting . A great mix of possible culprits. Great suspense and a conclusion that I didn't see coming. I hope there will be more Amory and Milo books.

Solid effort

A most entertaining book. Very much enhaced by an excellent narrator. Well rounded caracters and a refreshingly unortodox denoument.

Great fun and brilliantly narrated as always.

Great fun and brilliantly narrated by Karen Cass, as always. Not so many Americanisms in this book. :)

Another murder mystery for the Ames

Amory and Milo have returned to their country home, Thorncrest Manor to await the birth of their first child. Milo is hoping to keep Amory away from mysteries but unfortunately a suspicious death brings matters close to home. Deception it seems is rife within their village and Amory cannot stand by when a long lost relative is arrested for the crime. Will Amory unearth the truth before she enters motherhood.

Fast becoming a favourite of Amory and Milo Ames and now waiting for the next instalment of this great series.
