Summary

Merlin’s final words haunt the Sentinel’s dreams.

Kellan’s eidetic memory replays them with perfect clarity each night since he breached the guff and withdrew three human souls. Now, more than a year later, both he and his Soulborn wife are visited by an entity who channeled Universal power to enter our world from another.

This Emissary of Destruction provides the young Sentinel with a gift of unimaginable power and a dire warning. This combination sets Kellan on a journey which takes him to the land of Fae. There he must gain support from the Fairy King and Queen.

Unfortunately, all Fae extract a price commensurate with the help they provide, and Kellan is no exception.

The royals send him to confront historic evils and tragedy in return for empowering the emissary’s gift. As well laid plans built by Mantels, gods, and other immortals hurtle toward their conclusion only one element could not have been anticipated.

What would the Sentinel of Order do to honor departed friends and protect those who remain? Kellan has risked his life many times for those he loves. Is he now also willing to accept, a burden of chaos....

Really enjoying this series so very much! I love the interactions between all the characters, it feels real. Still laughing out loud while listening! Again the pop culture references just make me smile so much.

An authors dedication

I rarely write reviews for books but when I do, it’s because I feel it needs to be written. Not only do the characters feel natural and real in their communication with each other, which by the way, infuriates me when writers butcher. I loathe when characters keep things tucked away inside for no reason other than to further a certain line of story. Or when a character tries his hardest to explain something just to be overlooked and ignored. Looking at you Harry P. But this just feels done right. And I’m glad it does. The story puts you through your emotions and makes you wish things could’ve worked out better.

P.s. if you get to the end of the first book, you’d have realized this, but the author takes the time to talk about impacts on the story and references as well as critics and supporters. This amazed me because I go through so many books on here and hardly find anyone with authors notes that literally talk about the good and bad reviews of each of their books. So Robert, I applaud you for taking the time to show you care about everyone’s input. Good or bad.

grab a tissue.

First, I am not one to submit reviews so this is a new thing. That being said, I absolutely love this series. The characters are well-developed and their lives are intertwined to perfection. This series, and especially this book # 4, have invoked every possible emotion. The next book cannot come soon enough!

Nick, as usual, does a fantastic job and I originally chose the first book based on the fact that he was the narrator. I am grateful I did. The author does a great job of writing to multigenerations. My 25 year old loves this series just as much as I do.

If you are a Brandon Sanderson fan and enjoy epic fantasies, You really need to give this author's books a read. You will not be disappointed.

Great book with a fantastic cliff hanger

Nick is one of my favorite narrators and Robert is a great writer. Together, their partnership on this book has made for fantastic entertainment for my whole family. The witty banter between characters is hilarious and the ending of A Burden of Chaos was both suspenseful and moving. The worst part of this book is having to wait until book 5.

Worth Actually Reading

I listen to books. Seldom to I read books. Like many of you, I do not have the time. Well, for "A Burden of Chaos" I made the time. Not by choice, but necessity. You see it took over six month to come out on Audible. I just missed the characters so much, I had to read the book. Then when the audible version came out (May 2019), I enjoyed the story again listening to Nick Podehl do his wonderful performance bringing the characters to life. If you have not read the previous books, I envy you. You have 4 fantastic books to look forward to. Read them. Enjoy. Tell your friends. Help support Robert. Sadly, I must now wait for the next book (slated for November 2019).

For those wanting to know "when will the next book be out?" I was most pleased to find that Robert created the area http://spartamac.com/current-writing. The area will show the status on books with nice progress bars. The storytelling continues to be fantastic and needs time to work through whatever writing process Robert uses. It is good to have somewhere to monitor and see if Robert is working more like Brandon Sanderson or Patrick Rothfuss.

In summary, the Sentinels of Creation series just keep getting better as the characters develop and grow. That include Lucifer, who we now know will grant success to authors just to mess up the author priorities so they never finish their book series. That truly is evil. Read, and you will enjoy. A Burden of Chaos was a fantastic addition that ends with a significant cliff hanger. Like me, you are going to want book 5 ASAP. Now you know where you can monitor the progress.

Totally Awesome! Not one to be missed!

For the past three books, Kellan has found himself cornered, challenged and faced with hard decisions. None of his past experiences could have prepared him for the unique “gift” he won from a dangerous entity nor the challenging interactions with the Fae. Robert Ross, the author, has revealed more and more about Kellan and his friends.

This fourth book is full of twists and turns that will leave the listener breathless and, frankly, laughing until the tears roll down your cheeks. Until the last few pages when Ross makes the final twist in this book … well, let’s just say Ross has thrown the most breathtaking curve ball at his fans – Oh yes he did!

The dialog was perfect! The conversations flowed naturally. Holding true to the characters, Ross continues to develop and grow them accordingly. We get a glimpse of the Vampire child he delivered in a previous book – the interaction between them was very well done and insightful. There is no question about the goodness within Kellan and his being the Sentinel of Order.

Nick Podehl is the perfect Kellan and his performance is top notch; his skill brings Kellan’s world to life. His voices are perfect for the characters and I love his accents. He moves the story forward with his intuitive portrayal of each character. When the parents of Juliette are introduced to a demon … well the chaos that follows is hilariously perfect.

I have enjoyed each of Ross’s books but this one is different in the sense that the listener gets a deeper glimpse into Kellan and his friends. If you enjoy humor, suspense and supernatural beings, this is perfect for you. All I can say to Robert Ross is "get busy on the next book!"

The audio quality of this book was clear and well done. There were no issues – it is high quality.

Unfortunately, 5 stars is the highest rating allowed - it deserves a much higher one.

Never judge a book by its cover....

But do judge a book by the narrator! If not for the fact Nick Podehl narrated this entire series I may never have purchased the first book and would have missed out on a very good fantasy series. Nick Podehl giving voice to Robert Ross’s words was a perfect combination of awesomeness!
