Not a comfortable word for anyone with this hellish habit.
This condition is about seeking comfort. like thumbsucking. Never beat yourself up about it its probably got you through some bad times. I had narsassistic parents but throughout all of my therapy nobody thought to look at the envoirement I was in. That was the basis of the problem. Not me! I just found a way to cope. It's taken 48yrs for me too see this. As sufferers we need to change our thoughts, build our self esteem and emotional resilience and we will stop needing to go to our head picking, scratching or pulling habit. You are very clever to have found something to get you through the emotional hell youve had. Heal your wounds and that thing you do will fade away and stop.
This I'd my experience.
...and believe me I tried everything from ducktape to hypnosis. Love the incredible, intelligent, loving, resourceful and sensitive soul that you are.
There is where you will heal. x
