Wingmen Show

By: Drew Brown and Paul Thompson
  • Summary

  • Two Dope Boys in a Navy jet. The Wingmen Show is a weekly podcast about challenges and opportunities in everyday life. Your hosts are two guys born in Harlem, New York previously unknown to each other. Separately, they became Navy pilots flying high performance jet aircraft on and off of aircraft carriers patrolling the world’s oceans. Their paths did not cross formally until they ended up flying for the same airline after their active-duty military service had ended. They have a wide range of experiences spanning the worlds of basketball and boxing. Drew’s father is Drew Bundini Brown, Muhammad Ali’s Wingman and coined the iconic phrase “Float Like A Butterfly Sting, Like A Bee". Martial Arts and Show Business are also areas of mutual interest. Drew has been featured nationally on television programs such as the Donahue Show and the Today Show. He has also appeared in hundreds of newspapers and magazines. Both are published authors as well as former Navy jet pilots and Commercial Airline Pilots; they retired after having flown the Boeing 777 airliner. The cultural mix of religions, immigrant parents and grandparents from Europe and the Caribbean gives them an uncommon perspective on racial matters. Melding the cultures of New York City, Pittsburgh, New Orleans, Memphis, the Caribbean and Atlanta has helped shape their worldview when combined with the life they have seen and experienced having flown extensively to countries throughout the world. They are wingmen to each other, providing advice, guidance and constructive criticism when needed. The goal of the show is to inspire and entertain those unafraid to expand their minds and perhaps learn something new in the hope that the listeners can become wingmen to others. Each one, teach one.

Who would have guessed that before he became our beloved Commander Drew Brown, he was a young civilian who ran an after-hours, fancy-schmancy nightclub that attracted the rich and famous in New Orleans.

Customer service varies a lot depending on the business. Companies like American Express, Apple and Chick Fil-A rank at the top of the list while lesser brands rank very low. The selection and training process of the successful companies are largely responsible for the consistency of high performing employees who display a can-do attitude regardless of the situation.

The passing of the a man considered by many to be the greatest baseball player that ever lived, Willie Mays, marks the end of an era in professional sports where supreme athletic performance was not muted even under harshest of social conditions in the country. In addition to being a Korean War veteran Willie Mays always had a smile on his face, a good word for everyone, and moved about with a calm demeanor and quiet confidence.

One of the most effective tools to address mental illness and the stress that plagues modern society is the use of dogs. Canines have been introduced as four-legged therapists to serve people in a wide array of environments ranging from elementary schools to Navy aircraft carriers at sea, with stunning results.

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy or CTE as it’s known is a concern for everyone participating in certain sports, especially football. Repeated head-to-head collisions can have disastrous consequences over the long term. Fortunately, new headgear is being developed to help lessen the damage caused by such collisions thereby making a violent sport less damaging. Meet a wingman who willingly retraced his path through uncharted wilderness to rescuers to help recover someone close to him in desperate need of being rescued.

Bravery is not always the absence of fear but rather the willingness to press forward into unfamiliar territory or patterns that involve taking risks. There is much good news in the world, and especially so for many corporate CEO’s whose average annual compensation sits at $15.7 million per year. North Korea is at it again with the trash balloons. In response to South Korea’s propaganda campaign broadcast on loud speakers near the border, to show their displeasure, their neighbor to the north has resumed airborne deliveries of refuse. The basketball world lost a great champion. The late Jerry West whose outlined image stands as the global symbol of the National Basketball Association distinguished himself as a player and executive with various teams and helped transform the league into the global brand that it is today. If a company offers a lot of money to a high school student to endorse a sports drink or product, take it; if invested properly it will be worth a lot; and don’t forget about taxes! There are different dimensions to total wellness ranging from physical to spiritual. To stay in a sense of balance pay attention to your health, wealth, relationships with others and the world around you. Meet a wingman who contributed generously to first responders as well as his overall community, all at the same time.

Everyone has a talent in something. It may be apparent or hidden inside of you, just waiting to come out. In a time of great social and political change, Mexico has elected its first female president. The country where women have only been allowed to vote for a few decades will now be led by a Jewish woman whose grandparents emigrated to the country after fleeing NAZI persecution during World War II.

North and South Korea have been at odds with each other for more than seventy years. The North had taken the unusual step of displaying their displeasure with their neighbor to the south by intentionally sending large balloons filled with trash designed to eventually crash and make a mess that had to be cleaned up. North Korea has given their intention to stop the practice, but promise to resume the trashy flights if South Korea promotes propaganda against their regime.

Young college athletes can be paid legally. The NCAA has agreed to a revenue sharing plan with colleges that will allow individual schools to compensate for their athletic participation without penalty, thereby changing the face of amateur sports.

If a young person is interested in learning to fly there are many sources of information available for those interested in flight training. Organizations such as the Commemorative Air Force, Civil Air Patrol, and Reserve Officer Training Corps units in high schools and colleges are just some of the resources available to those who have an interest in aviation.

Turbulence while flying is just as unwanted by the aircrew as it is the passengers. Sometimes severe turbulence is undetectable, therefore to avoid any big surprises, keep your seat belt fastened at all times.

Meet two wingmen who personify sacrifice as well as mutual support.
