  • My Graves' Disease Story
    Sep 24 2024

In late 2007, I found myself a little overweight and set out on a mission to lose weight through dieting and detoxing. The plan seemed to be working, and by 2008, I had lost a lot of weight. One day, while walking around a retail store, I decided to check my blood pressure on one of their automated machines. While my blood pressure was normal, my heart rate was elevated. This was my first clue that something was wrong.

In today’s episode, I’m sharing my Graves’ disease story, from how I was diagnosed to the testing I did and the main approaches I used to restore my health. I’m discussing common symptoms, why it’s essential to address the autoimmune nature of the condition, options for conventional and natural treatment, recommended dietary changes, stress management techniques, the significance of personalized care, and more.

This information will help you regardless of whether you were recently diagnosed with Graves’ disease or have been dealing with the condition for many years. Enjoy the episode!

  • Your Thyroid Questions Answered Part 1
    Sep 19 2024

What’s the connection between insulin and thyroid disease? Is high cholesterol in any way a result of low thyroid issues? Does 5G radiation affect the thyroid? How do I know if I have any chance to live normally and without the use of thyroid medication?

Today, I’m back with another Q&A episode, answering multiple questions submitted by the Save My Thyroid community. While I can’t get to everyone’s questions every time, I love creating these for you, and I’ll do similar episodes every couple of months. Please share your questions with me by emailing info@naturalendocrinesolutions.com, and I'll include the most relevant ones in upcoming episodes.

    In this episode, I'm answering:

    • Q1: What’s the connection between insulin and thyroid disease?
    • Q2: My son has complete hair loss, his blood pressure has been elevated, I feel something is off with his kidneys, and he has Hashimoto's. He’s ten years old and was diagnosed at three years old with Hashimoto's. He also has Down syndrome. He is dairy, grain, and soy-free and only eats organic foods. I’ve reduced all the toxins I can think of and taken supplements, but something is still off.
    • Q3: I took the vaccine, and I developed hyperthyroidism and Graves’. I’m on methimazole, one pill, five milligrams a day; my antibodies are 458 and coming down. How do I lower my antibodies now that my T3 and T4 are normal and I want to get off the methimazole?
    • Q4: Can Graves’ cause anhedonia despite steady thyroid hormone levels?
    • Q5: Can low-dose naltrexone (LDN) at 0.05 to 4.5mg help with hypothyroidism, Hashimoto's autoimmune disease?
    • Q6: I would like to discuss why methimazole suppresses TSH and why some people have antibodies for both Hashimoto’s and Graves’.
    • Q7: I've done a 24-hour iodine loading test, which showed 60%, which is below the 90% level, so I’m deficient in iodine. How long should I wait before testing again?
    • Q8: What are your thoughts on taking raw, desiccated glandular supplements?
    • Q9: Last year, my husband, Jeff, diagnosed with hypothyroidism, was taking a daily dose of iodine, approximately 550 micrograms. Should he be completely off iodine?
    • Q10: Does 5G radiation affect the thyroid?
    • Q11: Is high cholesterol in any way a result of low thyroid issues?
    • Q12: How do I know if I have any chance of 100% recovery to live normally and without the use of thyroid medication?
    • Q13: Can Hashimoto's present as Graves’?

As always, I hope you find this episode valuable, and I look forward to catching you in the next episode!

  • How To Find Your Autoimmune Thyroid Triggers
    Sep 17 2024

Healing your thyroid when it comes to conditions like Graves' disease and Hashimoto's thyroiditis starts with finding and removing the autoimmune thyroid triggers that are impacting you.

According to the triad of autoimmunity, three components are necessary for autoimmunity to develop: genetic predisposition, environmental triggers, and a leaky gut. For most people, a combination of these components and multiple triggers are at play.

Today I’m exploring the four main categories of triggers as well as testing that you may want to consider. I discuss how food, stress, infections, and environmental toxins can impact the thyroid, when I recommend testing, why testing is not always worth the cost, my experience with identifying my triggers when I dealt with Graves’ disease, and more. Enjoy the episode!

  • Which viruses can trigger thyroid autoimmunity?
    Sep 12 2024

Although most viruses don’t directly trigger autoimmune thyroid conditions such as Graves’ disease or Hashimoto’s, certain types of viral infections can play a role in developing these conditions. This can happen via a number of different mechanisms, including molecular mimicry and direct bystander activation.

In my practice, I’ve seen numerous patients where different viral infections, were a potential trigger in the development of their autoimmune thyroid conditions. Today, I’m sharing some of the more common viruses associated with thyroid autoimmunity and what you can do to support your thyroid and immune system.

In this episode, you’ll learn about:
    - How viruses trigger autoimmunity
    - COVID-19 as a potential trigger for Graves' disease and Hashimoto's
    - Epstein-Barr Virus and its association with autoimmune conditions
    - Hepatitis C and its implications for thyroid health
    - Parvovirus B19 and its potential role in developing Hashimoto's thyroiditis
    - Herpes virus and HTLV-1's association with thyroid autoimmunity
    - My approach to testing for specific viruses
    - Natural treatment options to support immune health
    - Why I focus on optimizing the immune system to combat viral infections

  • Reghan's Graves' Disease Journey (Save My Thyroid Audit)
    Sep 10 2024

Today, we’re doing things a little differently. In the very first Save My Thyroid Audit, I’m chatting with Reghan, a college senior recently diagnosed with Graves’ disease, and I’m sharing practical advice to help her improve her health.

Reagan's journey with Graves' disease began with a lengthy diagnostic process involving multiple doctors and tests, and she’s currently trying a natural approach to treatment, hoping to avoid taking antithyroid medication if possible.

While this isn’t the same as the comprehensive consultations I do with patients, you’ll get a lot of value from the conversation. Reghan and I discuss holistic strategies for managing Graves' disease, how to think about diet and lifestyle changes, which natural supplements to consider, and more. Enjoy the episode!

  • What is Graves' Rage?
    Sep 5 2024

Some people with Graves’s disease can experience episodes of intense and sudden episodes of anger, irritability, and emotional instability, known as Graves’ rage.

This is mostly due to the excess production of thyroid hormones, which can affect mood, although other factors can also play a role. Today, I’m sharing what exactly causes Graves’ rage, how you can identify it, and what you can do about it.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:
    - How thyroid hormone impacts mood
    - Common symptoms of Graves’ rage
    - Communication and the consequences of Graves’ rage
    - Treatment options and why you should focus on addressing the underlying causes
    - How support groups can help

  • Thyroid Conditions in Children with Dr. Roy Steinbock
    Sep 3 2024

“In general, I see more sicker kids and a lot more autoimmunity than I saw early on.” - Dr. Roy Steinbock

Thyroid conditions in children are often missed since getting a diagnosis is much less straightforward than for adults. Unlike adults, where screening follows a much more standard pattern, children don’t typically undergo annual testing, especially not for thyroid hormone levels.

They also often have symptoms long before their labs start to show abnormal results, and the symptoms they’re experiencing can easily be dismissed as side effects of growth and development.

Today, I’m excited to be joined by pediatrician Dr. Roy Steinbock, who joins us to share insights into thyroid conditions in children. Dr. Roy is a Board-Certified Pediatrician with an integrative and patient-centered approach. With over 20 years in primary care, he built a solid foundation assisting patients and families with diverse medical conditions. He believes that investigating the root cause, rather than only addressing symptoms, is the best route to achieving and maintaining optimal health and well-being.

In this conversation, Dr. Roy and I discuss how thyroid conditions present in children, the importance of early diagnosis and comprehensive testing, the challenges of diagnosing thyroid issues in children, the role of nutrition and lifestyle, why treatment approaches must differ for adults and children, the need for a holistic approach to pediatric thyroid health, and more. Enjoy the episode!
