Summary

What happens when the one that got away comes back? Find out in this sparkling debut from Mhairi McFarlane.

"Think of the great duos of history. We're just like them."

"You mean like Kylie and Jason? Torvill and Dean? Sonny and Cher?"

"I think you’ve missed the point, Rachel."

Rachel and Ben. Ben and Rachel. It was them against the world. Until it all fell apart.

It’s been a decade since they last spoke, but when Rachel bumps into Ben one rainy day, the years melt away. They’d been partners in crime and the best of friends. But life has moved on: Ben is married. Rachel is not. Yet in that split second, Rachel feels the old friendship return. And along with it, the broken heart she’s never been able to mend. Hilarious, heartbreaking and everything in between, you’ll be hooked from their first hello.

Fantastic!!!

Where does You Had Me at Hello rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

One of the best I've listened to! Very good storyline! Loved every second but sad to hear it end. Very humorous start and such a beautiful romance!

Amusing and somewhat touching

A warm, funny story capturing a love lost and found again. Had flavour of Jane Austen ‘persuasion’ about it. Mhairi mcfarlane never fails. Narrated well by Julie hesmondhalgh who brought each character to life.

Best book I have listened to for ages!

hThis is a fantastic book from a great new chick-lit talent. I have listened to it twice and absolutely loved it. The narrator's Sheffield accent takes a little bit of getting used to but I would urge you to bear with it. It's a gripping 'will they - won't they?' storyline with the mystery of what happened between the male and female characters in the past as a constant theme throughout the book.

I am eagerly anticipating Mhairi McFarlane's next book.

Narration is hard to understand

I read the previous reviews about the narrator's accent and thought I'd give it a try. After a few hours into the book I gave up - too thick accent stops it being an easy listen. I think I missed about a half of the story.
The plot is interesting but I am going to find something else to listen to.

Don't like the way it's read

Loved this book, bought it on audio but I can't say that I enjoyed it as much. I felt that the voice and accent (too strong for someone that's not lived in Yorkshire for 10yrs) of the reader wasn't right. Listen to a same pre purchase

Great story

Great story had read the book. Didn't really like the voice as it didn't match what I had in my head but still a great book

Struggled visualise anything of the characters, just Hayley Cropper

The ending was predictable but I think with a novel like this, it is what you are expecting/paying for. There were many twists that I didn’t expect and overall, I did enjoy it.
My only gripe was that with Julie Hesmondhalgh as the narrator, I couldn’t picture any of the characters as all I could visualise Hayley Cropper. I’m not sure I’m keen on celebrity narrators full stop, but with Julie being such an iconic, British treasure, I couldn’t see past her voice.
Would likely not read another if she were narrating again. I’ll definitely listen to more of Mhairi Mcfarlane.
