Summary

The wealthy, powerful Snæberg clan has gathered for a family reunion at a futuristic hotel set amongst the dark lava flows of Iceland’s remote Snæfellsnes peninsula. Petra Snæberg, a successful interior designer, is anxious about the event, and her troubled teenage daughter, Lea, whose social-media presence has attracted the wrong kind of followers. Ageing carpenter Tryggvi is an outsider, only tolerated because he's the boyfriend of Petra's aunt, but he's struggling to avoid alcohol because know what happens when he drinks...

Humble hotel employee, Irma, is excited to meet this rich and famous family and observe them at close quarters...perhaps too close...

As the weather deteriorates and the alcohol flows, one of the guests disappears, and it becomes clear that there is a prowler lurking in the dark. But is the real danger inside...within the family itself?

The family party from hell

What happens when a family of rich, privileged, hard drinking narcissists come together for a weekend celebration in a fancy, remote hotel they’ve hired exclusively?

To say things get messy is an understatement.

Aside from the author’s Tarantinoesque habit of flipping about in time, this is pretty much the perfect summer thriller. The sliding timeline challenges aside, the slow pace reveals clue crumbs for the listener that take you through the stories of our character’s ghastly lives. Whether they’re the aggressors or the victims in this family, their self-absorbed behaviours are fascinating.

Yes, there’s a couple of extraordinary coincidences to overlook plot-wise, but altogether a fun listen with lashings of schadenfreude and a great narration.

Slightly disappointed

Really enjoyed the previous 3 books in the series. The narration was pleasant but far too many tangents constantly disturbing the thread of the story . Also , couldn’t understand why Elmer was being introduced at the end when she had been in the 3 previous stories?!!!
