About this listen

Sebastian: If there's one thing I've learned in my life, it's that fate is a f--king bitch. Once upon a time, I had everything a person could hope for - great parents, loyal friends, and Liv. She was everything to me, my best friend, the girl of my dreams, my kingdom come. And then bam! I had nothing. Sure, now it seems like I'm the king of the world. I have fame, an endless supply of beautiful women at my feet, and more money than I can spend in my lifetime. It's all meaningless without the girl I can't forget. So when I see her in the last place I expect, I don't think twice; I vow to get her back.

Liv: They say you never forget your first love, but I wish I could. Sebastian was the boy next door, the one who stole my heart, only to give it back bruised and broken. I've tried my best to move on, to erase him from my mind, but how can I do that when he is literally everywhere? There's no escape when your ex-boyfriend is on the cover of every magazine, when his music won't stop playing on the radio. Was it a stupid decision to move across the ocean to the same city he calls home? Maybe. I was only following my dream. I didn't expect Sebastian to crash back into my life. Resisting him would be the smart choice. I just don't know if I'm strong enough.

Contains mature themes.

Good story telling

Good story and some very factual scenarios in today’s glamorous but destructive world and their imperfections.

Loved it

I was completely hooked the hole time it’s a brilliant story and the narrator was perfect. I would highly recommend this book.

Predictable and pedestrian

This had the makings of a good story but somehow turned into a pedestrian, predictable tale

Sebastian and Liv are childhood best friends who briefly become something more before something terrible happens and Sebastian leaves without a goodbye, breaking both their hearts.

Five years later they meet again, after he’s become famous as a member of a boyband, and Liv has herself turned into a bit of a cold hearted heart breaker. He realises the error of his ways, determines to get her back, temporarily destroys her life because he’s a bit stupid/weak/naive, then wins her back with grand gestures.

I had to jump through the high school stuff, all a bit too sweet for me, even though given they were only 16 I get why it couldn’t be different. Then we got some filler of how he became famous (even though music didn’t seem to be his thing given he had a guitar which he couldn’t even play when we met him), and some further filler of what she was doing and how she ended up in London, where he had been in the five intervening years. There is a host of additional characters, all rather unnecessary, with a whole sub plot surrounding Lloyd and Ryan, which I didn’t really care about, which in the end seemed to be merely a device for the final betrayal. There’s a lot of unnecessary detail about her internship which is pointless.

Finally about half way thru the book Sebastian and Liv meet again and he determines to get her back. He really is rather weak, he treats Gretchen quite badly, and I wasn’t sure whether the author wanted us to like Gretchen or not, at one point it looked like she was going to become the villain, but by the end she just seems like another victim who Sebastian mows down to get what he wants, I.e.Liv.

Don’t get me wrong Sebastian isn’t unpleasant, just a bit stupid. Also there’s a whole issue re the tabloids and the paparazzi in London, yet seems totally silent about social media and how it’s much easier nowadays for people to get their story out via various social media platforms.

I just found it all rather childish (and I read a lot of YA stuff - even some high school stuff. )

The narration was great from both - but I had to knock a star off for the absolutely dreadful British, Irish and Australian accents from the male narrator. If Oliver came from old money he wouldn’t sound like Dick van Dyke in Mary Poppins. The female narrator did a decent British accent, but I noted she didn’t even bother trying with the Australian or Irish accents - which was probably the better decision of the two.

Given this is in the Plus Catalogue it isn’t a disaster if you give it a listen. However if you have credits there are better rockstar/pop star ones to spend your credits on.

Teenage drama

Okay, so I was not prepared to read so much teenage drama, when I went into it I judged the book by the cover and thought it would be a more adult type novel. So just for people after me, if you read this comment before starting the book, be prepared for it, it is very much a young adult, first love kinda book with lots of drama.
