Summary

In this moving, poignant novel by the best-selling author of Birds of America, we share a grown woman's bittersweet nostalgia for the wildness of her youth.

The summer Berie was 15, she and her best friend, Sils, had jobs at Storyland in upstate New York where Berie sold tickets to see the beautiful Sils portray Cinderella in a strapless evening gown. They spent their breaks smoking, joking, and gossiping. After work they followed their own reckless rules, teasing the fun out of small-town life, sleeping in the family station wagon, and drinking borrowed liquor from old mayonnaise jars. But no matter how wild, they always managed to escape any real danger - until the adoring Berie sees that Sils really does need her help - and then everything changes.

Just wonderful! A few glitches in the recording but the performance and novel were ex

Exquisite overall. Brilliant writing and a great reading slightly let down by the production who didn’t pick up on some editorial glitches

Beautifully written and read

I’m very past due reading Lorrie Moore but am so happy to have caught up with her. A strong mixture of prose, poetry and insight.

a nice quick listen

The story is a bit slow moving yet I loved the imagery.
The words are descriptive word pictures that are beautiful and paint vivid images in your mind. That's what I enjoyed the most.

just so so

Struggled to finish this one. Perhaps it was just deeper than I was looking for, given the title.

Sheer poetry

Visually stunning and playfully phrased. A sweet, quirky record of the magical childhood friendships we treasure, ultimately drift away from, and mourn the intense goodness of.

one of those waiting for it to get better

you spend the time waiting. a long chapter describing a father that hardly factors in to the story. an ending that took too long to come and makes no sense. don't waste your time

I Just Couldn’t Finish It

Writers are always told to ‘show,’ not ‘tell.’ This book is entirely ‘tell,’ at least as far as I listened. About 90 minutes. I kept waiting for something to happen, but it was a pretty boring 90 minutes. It seemed kind of self indulgent.

Not what I expected

I can kind of understand why the book has gotten good reviews but I personally found it excessively and annoyingly descriptive, and very pretentious. I also had no real desire to keep reading as the plot was not engaging in the slightest. I finished it, but wouldn’t recommend.

An insightful story told with tenderness

I have only recently discovered Lorrie Moore and am enthralled by her prose and her ability to write in such a meaningful and mindful way about life’s experience. This story of a woman recalling a significant time and relationship in her teens, her coming of age, her longings and confusions, whilst unique, holds within it the story of so many girls. The narration is perfect.

Poetic Prose!

Lorrie is lyrical in her presentation. She invites us into the world of a growing girl with all the angst and joy and ingènue.
